Hi, I play fiddle, guitar, and concertina and i'm highly interested in finding a school with a folk music scene. is there alot of folk music activity on campus? do many people play instruments?
thanks,
Hallie

any info about the music scene at all?

Can’t answer specific to Vassar…but…the Hudson Valley has been a rich center of folk music activity…mostly because Pete Seeger lives near Poughkeepsie. Folk Legacy records, and it’s founders, were in nearby Sharon Ct.

You might call the Music Department and check their website.

Good luck. I think you will find lots of schools that focus on Classical music and Jazz. I can say, as a parent so my view is limited, that there is lots of musical activity on the Vassar Campus.

if I were interested in folk music activity on campus, the Vassar College music department is the last place I’d call.

Check out Cornell, there has traditionally been a lot of music going on in Ithaca

As a Vassar parent, I have posted lots on the strengths of the music department and music on campus. There have been several folk concerts in the last year. Not sure about the specifics of folk music, but there are many different types of bands and musical groups.
My S picked Vassar because of the strong music scene there in all types of music.

In terms of the music department, no. The department mainly focuses on classical and jazz. But just wandering the campus, I’ve noticed a lot of people that play folk, bluegrass, etc. So you could possibly join up with people or create your own student organization.
