Food at Michigan--how is it?

I know this shouldnt be a major factor in my decision whether or not to go to Michigan but...how's the food? Especially as compared to places like Cornell and VA Tech.

food at michigan dorms (cousins, east quad) is pretty bad: over-boiled pasta, mystery stir fry. there are plenty of good restaurants on campus. i have heard that the food at cornell dorms is very good.

I was in Bursley for lacrosse camp a couple summers ago, and I thought the food was actually good. Maybe it depends on the dorm, or that it was during the summer(and they didn't have to cook for so many people).

Yeah, if i was just eating at Couzens and East Quad, I'd say the food sucks too. East Quad has the nastiest food on campus from my experience (I've eaten at over half of the dorms). South Quad, Markley, and Stockwell tend to have very tasty food IMO. Much of it depends on dorms, but as a whole I'd say it's average for college food.

live with it

Ok. So the concensus seems to be the food's average..o well, there has to be some bad aspects toe very place.

how expensive are the resturants at UM?

You don't have to eat at Couzens and East Quad. You can use the same meal plan and eat at Stockwell or South Quad any time.

Geez, East Quad had the worst dorm food even in my days. You'd think they would have improved by now.

Supposedly Bursley is the best and South Quad second best. That makes South Quad the best on central campus. I live in South Quad, but it's not that great. During the holidays, it's pretty good. It's probably good once a week for dinner.

Huggybear, as an alum of both Cornell and Michigan, I will tell you this...Cornell dorm food is better than Michigan dorm food. I would say Michigan dorm food is average by university standards whereas Cornell food is very good by university standards. But Michigan food is certainly edible, and there are like 50 decent and affordable restaurants within 10 minutes walk from campus.

Maguo, restaurants around campus aren't cheap, but they aren't expensive either. For $15, you can have a decent meal...for $25, you can have a good meal. You can have a great NY style pizza meal and a large drink for less than $7 at NYPD (New York Pizza Depot), one block away from Central Campus.

I personally have decided that 13 meals a week was too much for eating at the dorms. I changed it to 9 meals a week with $200 in entree plus. You can use these $200 for eating at the Union, laundry, Cafe ConXion, and a variety of other things. I found more value in it. I've heard that on the 13 meal plan, each meal costs about $9. I never get that much value out of my dining hall meals. I'd rather go to Jimmy John's for about $5.

You can use entree plus in the Union to buy chinese food, pizza, wendy, or subway also. That's always a good option if the dining hall doesn't have good food that day. There is probably one meal every other week where I just don't really like any of the entrees, so I just get cereal or something. Usually the food's just fine though (well, in South Quad).

jimmy johns and panda express (north campus) is the way to go

Not that it will matter for most of you... but Michigan is building a new dining hall attached to MoJo. It's scheduled to open in 2008 - and they'll close Stockwell, Couzens and Alice Lloyd dining halls at that time. There will also be a new dining hall in the new North Quad (which is on Central Campus). Next fall, there will be a new "food emporium" - which is going to be like a cafe/snack bar - in Bursley on North Campus. So they are making improvements in the dining program.

What if we wanted to shop for our own groceries? Are there many supermarkets around? Are they cheap? Can you have some type of grill or something in your dorm?

why are they closing all the other dinings halls? so everyone on the hill will be eating at Mojo for every meal? that's dumb

The new dining hall will be a marketplace -- like Movenpick if you're familiar with that restaurant. It's what almost all campuses -- including Cornell and VA Tech -- are doing. In a large dining center, it's possible to have more choices, stay open later. It will be an all new facility on the Palmer Field side of MoJo. They start construction this summer.

yeah, but it's still nice having to not walk outside when i want food.

Yeah, well it's a trade-off -- better food/longer hours vs convenience. You have to walk outside to go to class -- and there are little convenience stores in many of the halls so you can always find something to eat.

lol....on the issue of food i'm going to agree with barry.
