yea, I know it's silly, but how's the dorm food?

Meh.

But I only ever ate at West and South Quad.

This argument angers me more than anything else The dorm food was amazing! I don’t know what fancy, olive garden eating people flood this board, but I thought the food was great, and i don’t honestly know how people could really expect anything better.

Sorry. My mom’s a great cook. (But amazing is definitely a stretch.) And really? This “argument” (question & answer?) angers you more than anything else?

I think most of the food here is really great. And there’s more variety than I get at home, so I actually look forward to coming back to school after breaks for the food.

Well, I guess I may have been exaggerating a little. It may not be amazing, but I definitely would say it’s above average. Maybe this just bodes badly for my mom’s culinary skills though…

My mom is a good cook, but she only does like four meals. XD I’ve never had any problems with the quality of the food, but I live in East Quad so sometimes the options are a bit strange. But I could always walk to south quad or mojo.

yeah I don’t know why there is a perception among high school students that college dorm food tastes bad. I ate food at mojo for a week and it was nice. They offer u buffet style and you can pick whatever you want to eat. Its definitely above average at U of M.

And yeah, how much do you expect from dorm food? I mean its satisfying to eat and has good taste, shouldn’t people be happy with that?

One’s personal taste of food is such a huge varying opinion. I think some of the stuff they made is pretty good, but I’ve also encountered meals that made me gag. It’s dependent on what they’re serving.

I’d say it’s pretty good, but I don’t eat it every day (don’t have a meal plan) so I don’t know how boring it can get over time.

Each dining hall at UMich has a different theme … as some poster pointed out, the food at East Quad is strange at times (aka Smart Dogs, anyone?) because it tends to cater more towards vegetarians and vegans. Both MoJo and Bursley offer fresh pizza everyday (they serve it too in SQuad, but I’ve heard it’s pretty questionable there).

Entrees tend to be repetitive, especially for breakfast. Hot breakfasts run on a weekly cycle (you’ll see egg-and-cheese bagel sandwiches, for example, every week, and pancakes several times a week, but Bursley and MoJo do have an omelet station, which are HUGE btw). Hot lunch and dinner entrees can repeat anywhere from every other week (e.g. mac and cheese, which is immensely popular but BAD for you) to a month. From time to time, they’ll offer a special meal in honor of some cultural holiday to celebrate diversity, aka Chinese food on Chinese New Year and Cajun food on Mardi Gras. Most entrees are pretty decent for dorm food (I think on par with Brown), but sometimes the stuff UMich Housing thinks of is downright questionable (Szechuan Stuffed Eggplants … stuffed with carrots and rice? No thanks…) Vegetarians will be pleased because Housing likes to offer at least one vegetarian hot entree at most halls – most notably East Quad, MoJo, and Bursley. Salad bar doesn’t hurt either, but I hate how the hot veggies are usually reheated frozen stuff.

If you’re a health nut, you’ll be disappointed to learn that the food that the dining hall serves sometimes is pretty greasy and unhealthy. Today’s Spinach Lasagna was drowning in oil, even though they slapped the so-called “MSmart” label on it. Heck, they do that for Diet Coke, and that stuff kills you.

I started out with unlimited this year and I’m downgrading to 200 next year, to give you an idea of what I think. To sum things up, meals aren’t bad (on par with/close to Brown’s food, which I’ve actually had so I can compare, but can still use improvements), but the downside is that they’re repetitive and quite expensive … under unlimited it comes out to be $8/meal. Upside is that the fruit they have at breakfast is awesome. Freshly cut pineapple and melon = win. :D

Now back to EECS and programming homework…

hahahaha thanks! it sounds pretty decent!
