Food at UIUC

Recently I've been trying to eat much healthier. I've been cutting down on fats and carbs and increasing my fiber intake and protien. I was just wondering, what health concious choices does U of I offer. I was unable to visit so I'm not sure what their cafateria has to offer. Do they have any high fiber meals, fresh fruits (blueberries, strawberries, etc.), yougurt (preferably Greek or fat free), or even fresh deli meats? Any information would help a great deal.

I’ve heard that food at UIUC in the dining halls is bad and repetitive… Is that true?

The food is fairly bad. It definitely wasn’t even close to the best campus food out of the placed I visited back when I was applying for school. However, I did have yogurt with granola and raisin bran just about every morning for breakfast when I lived in the dorms. There are (limited) options for eating healthy, but if you are really that concerned, you will have to make your own food once you get an apartment. Dorm cafeterias have healthy options, just not many because not many people are interested at that stage of their lives.

`hmm so how would you rate the food on a scale of 5? 1 being extremely dissatisfactory and 5 being very satisfactory.(if you don’t consider the health part of it)

I don’t know, maybe a 2.5-3.0 kind of range. It was edible, and I never felt like it would make me sick or anything, but certainly was… bland. Chicken finger day was awesome though besides the fact that I always ate so many that I didn’t feel well for a couple hours, but that was my own doing. There were a few top notch meals, and a few meals that were a total joke. I don’t remember exactly which were the best simply because it was 5 or so years ago.

I can say that, at least at ISR, the ice cream was phenomenal. They had like an Edy’s machine (I think it was Edy’s) in the cafeteria, which severely hampered my ability to eat healthily with its related ability to force several ice cream cones down my gullet in one meal. Again, my fault, haha.

hehe thanks… I guess we can always try out the specialty restaurants for some variety and taste.

Yeah, I spent waaaay too much money on restaurants while living in Champaign-Urbana.

can’t you have them using regular meal plans or cafe credits…(i mean the specialty restaurants on campus)?

That program was just starting when I was a freshman if I remember right, so I never got to utilize it.

Its possible to find cheap food on campus, you just need to be creative so stuff doesn’t get bland. Personally I’d recommend going on the meal plan because its one less thing to worry about during your freshman year, and you’ll be able to meet and eat with friends in the halls. They have a wide selection of fruits and veggies at every dorm.

Personally, I’d say the food is a 3.5. It does get bland, but you’ll have one or two items you’ll normally look forward to. Tip for people in allen hall, is that the kosher food when they serve it tends to be rather good. Just make sure you use the paper plates to get it! =)
