Food on Campus

Does everyone know
that KP was voted WORST CAMPUS FOOD
in nation (I think)
last year ??

Funny thing is,
my kid doesnt complain about it.

Was her Moms cooking even worse ??
YES !!!

yeah, that was in the princeton review here is a CC string that talked about it last year

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=229961%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=229961</a></p>

my son said the food is "not bad" - so i figure he is eating and that's what counts. I also heard somewhere that these surveys were administered only to the incoming classes in the middle of the year. Not sure if that is correct but Plebe life in Jan/Feb at KP might not result in a bunch of happy answers.

my meal at parents weekend
in cafeteria
was passable coldcuts, etc
not horrible

food at little restaurant in basement
was a little more "gamey"

I was worried about the meals (and yes I am a good cook). One of the things my son said first was, "the food is good". The only complaint I have heard from another PC parent was on Sunday they do not serve breakfast but have brunch and her son is starving by then. That is where those power bars would come in helpful it they would give them back.

All in all it sounds like the kitchen staff may have gotten somewhat of a bad rap. I am sure it is not 'momma's cookin' but that's what keeps them coming back home so often.

My kid is NOT happy w/food. I told him, "Hmmm. If you feel this way after only 4 days, the next four years are going to be REALLY long :( " And he is VERY open about food (squid, Thai, Indian are favorites. He's not particularly picky). Maybe the staff were working shorthanded during INDOC, and things stabilize. Stay tuned.

The sample for Princeton review was VERY small, and voluntary -- I was forewarned about relying about it too much. Review the link listed earlier.

Things of more concern to me were "#1 Professors get low marks for academics." and "#1 Least happy Students Quality of Life". However, Admin has taken some steps on the teacher issue, and I applaud their action --we'll see how it turns out. I cannot imagine getting a group of such talented kids together and not having professors who are genuinely invested in their success. 4 academic years in 3 calendar years-Zowie!

And about "#2 Dorms Like Dungeons". I'd heard Admin response was (tongue in cheek) 'We won't stop trying until we're Number One!" OK. I thought that was great.

Seriously, DOT needs to really support the Academy fully. The academy is doing the best it can with what resources it has.
Write you Congressmen and Representatives requesting that they support DOTs efforts in this matter. It can only help improve everything, including food. OK. Off soapbox now.

yesterday, the admiral told us in a speech that Murphy hall is the worst in the country. for some reason i love our old run down barracks, and i hate the new ones....

Here's the problem with that survery in my opinion:

Midshipmen at KP will talk like it's the worst place in the world, but you let one outsider talk bad about the place and watch what happens.

Yes, there are some bad apples in the teaching staff, but in my experience the number is very small. Some have their own teaching styles that may not suit a particular student, but so does every college. The one thing that will happen over four years there is your midshipman will be set up for success on the Coast Guard Exam. Can anyone else name me one college where most students pass a five day written exam on the first try during their senior year????

Some professors are harder than others. One notorious professor on the Deck side (Capt Hard) is probably the most difficult professor I have ever had in my life (and that's including medical school), I even failed on of his sea projects, but guess what, I got a 100% on the Rules of the Road portion of the Coast Guard Exam and was finished in less than 30 minutes.

As to the food, yes it's bad, it always has been, but I don't know of many other college cafeteria's that feed 700 some odd people at the same time every day (lunch). The food is edible and each person eventually finds their niche. For the meals that I didn't like I'd go to the salad bar. For dinner as a plebe I always went to the burgers & pizza line, but eventually started going for the chicken (it's on the menu every night it seems). Just pull off the skin and it isn't too bad.

The complaints about the dorms are ridiculous in my eyes. Some of them are freaking air conditioned now. Come on, have you seen some of the dorms at "real colleges." And people have to pay money to live in those. The dorms are more than adequate for what one needs and the Academy is refurbishing them all. Yes, cinder block isn't the coziest of materials, but it sure was nice to lay against the wall on hot nights (this was before a/c)

I guess my main point here would be the survey forgot to realize that KP'ers will talk horribly about the school amongst each other and in an anonymous survey, but beware the outsider who does.

Believe me: Murphy hall is not the worst in the country. Have you ever seen West Hall at University of North Texas??? I'm sure there are others out there, but this is just one I know of off the top of my head.

come see my room... its animal house at the best but inspection ready...

surprisingly, this year, the food has been significantly better than last year i think. it still has some menu items that make me lose my appetite, but overall it's improving greatly.

and kp2001, you're dead on, we love to talk like this is hell on earth, but when talking to outsiders (other than family and old friends) we talk like this place is the great school ever made. tis funny, but tis true all the same. well put KP2001

I finally got to talk to my 2011 son today! I ask him how the food was and he replied "better than home." Well, as I picked myself up off the floor, he was quick to add......"not better than your cooking mom, but better than me having to fend for supper on nights when we were all busy." "At least there are cooked meals daily." :D

I was fully expecting my PC to complain about the food, but he has not. We think they {smartly} have him work up such an appetite, everything tastes good. He told us they are allowed snacks that are NCAA approved. I googled that and it is just what you would expect, healthy snacks. Geez, healthy eating, exercise, etiquette, chapel, ironing, cleaning, polishing.... think I'll sign my husband up.

What or where is this NCAA approved list. I googled and could not find anything. Does anyone have a link?

kp2001 was right about finding your niche with the food. After awhile everyone knows what they're going for. Chicken is served every night just about by the way...

As far as the barracks issue. The new ones are great, and the old ones are well...ok. When I visit friends at regular schools they have some pretty nice dorms...or house. Then again I've only been to about 3 regular colleges. The one thing that bothers me the most about living in the old dorms is the lack of a/c. Thousands went before me without it, I've gone 2 summers already without it. Yet, when I see those kids in 3rd and 4th co every summer in there it bugs me, the unfairness of it all, but it won't change anytime soon while I'm here, so I deal....until I heard that the 6 fans I have in my room draw more current then a small window a/c unit....and then oh wait, I deal with it again. It's not bad with the fan right on you at full blast.

davygravy....Why is window A/C not allowed? Or even one of those free standing a/c units?

It's argued that if we all were plugging those in we'd trip breakers. But technology is getting to a point today, where the window ac unit draws less current then all the fans I have going. Therefore...my fans should be tripping stuff....
