Recently (end of April 2017) in the Brandeis school newspaper, the Hoot, there was an article complaining about how unappetizing and unhealthy the meal plan food in the dining hall is at Brandeis. I also have heard about some current parents complaining about it too. Can any current Brandeis students comment ? Is it really that unhealthy and unappetizing ?
I am not a student, but I recently visited Brandeis while touring multiple colleges this year, and everyone in my family thought its food was among the best of all the colleges at which we ate!
It’s not that bad, but it does get repetitive after a while. The food itself isn’t disgusting, but there’s only so many times you can eat chicken drumsticks or plain pasta. It’s of course not the healthiest, but honestly? what college does have the healthiest foods?
Well, some colleges DO have fairly healthy and very fresh choices. I’m not sure if they are usually only small LAC’s though. My older child recently graduated from Bryn Mawr and the food was very good and very fresh there for the whole 4 years, although of course could start to feel a little repetitive – but the quality was fairly high nonetheless…and honestly there were always sufficient very good-tasting and satisfying healthy choices at every meal (and that child is a very picky “foody”)-- every time I visited, I enjoyed the food in the dining hall. And recently visiting certain other LAC’s (for example, Skidmore) and sampling the regular dining hall food on a regular school day there also left an impression that it had a lot of very healthy choices and the food was quite fresh and very good…Not that a college should be chosen or taken off the list just because of the food, but it does sort of “matter” at least health-wise (?) My current one has just enrolled in Brandeis but kind of “despite” the bad impression/experience of the food during the overnight that was done (during which there had just been a shrug of my child’s shoulders assumption that it might have been a “bad” day and not representative)…and now reading about it in the article in the Brandeis school newspaper and also reading on the brandeis family facebook group page about a lot of the parents/kids complaining about it, it raised our level of concern a bit…I am hoping that @TheGreyKing’s experience was of a more representative day than my child’s overnight visit and the reports in the school newspaper etc…
I will say this: college students love to complain especially when it gets repetitive. You can be healthy if you want to, it just takes a tiny bit more effort. And there are good choices. Just not always.
