Anybody on here for a little soccer? The original futbol?

My (3rd class) son plays football and also takes it very serious and is really looking forward to this year. The football players are a very close nit group. Many good athletes on this team but they are grossly under sized compared to most of their opponents. Kp2001, I believe they were in a different league back then with schools more like them, what a difference that makes. You will see when they play Kean what the size difference is. I only missed two games last year, I live 11 hours from KP and weekend trip were well worth it. Parents, please support the team as much as possible it is a great time and sometimes we are their only supporter. For those who will be coming from the west. We always stay in Bridgewater New Jersey at the Holiday Inn Express. $85 a night and the cleanest best kept hotel you will ever stay inn. Drive in Sat. Morning for the game. spend time with son after and drive back to Brigdewater Sat. Night. Hope to see alot of parents at the games.

Just talked with my 2nd class S and he says there were a lot of plebes at coaches night last night. Looking forward to getting his take on things after practice starts. GO KP

Nobody on here is debating whether the kids on the team take the sport seriously. They all do or else they wouldn't put up with the endless hours of practice, weight lifting, video sessions, etc. The fact of the matter is that the football team has been at best mediocre for the past several years, starting around my senior year (2000 season). Through about four games into the season the soccer team had scored more points than the football team (ouch!). And that was with the "different league." I don't buy the "we're undersized" or "we have to go to sea" excuses. The team has been good in the past with the same restrictions (and sometimes worse restrictions as before all third classmen went out for half the year so no spring practice then either). If you're worried about size take a look at USNA. They do pretty well running a system that works for the players they are able to recruit.

Other teams at Kings Point play the same teams and have the same difficulties in recruiting and time as the football team and some do extremely well. The soccer team has been to the NCAA tournament at least twice in the last 8 years, the sailing team is excellent, the wrestling team does pretty darn well and so do many others. Oh and look at our rugby squad. They do well for having "undersized players."

Okay, with all that being said.... I in no way am saying this to bash the football players. I support the team each week and will always cheer for them, losing season or winning season.

KP2001
To say that being undersized doesn't matter show you don't understand the sport. football plays in the Liberty League which is one of the best D3 football leagues in the east. They are proud to be there. While we have
6'2" 230lb O.L. , the teams in our league have 6'4" 275lb O.L.

The other sports except Track and wrestling are in the Landmark Conference which has schools more the size of USMMA. I too support all the teams and follow the wrestling team closely which is very good.

I believe the football team will be much improve this year, but they will have to stay healthy and work their butts off. Please don't compare football to soccer, while I believe soccer is a great sport with many good athletes, you can compare the two.

Oh, I understand the sport of football. I'm a pretty avid fan of college football and grew up in an area of the country where towns shut down on Friday nights for high school football....ever seen Friday Night Lights (not my town, but eerily similar). I realize size matters; however, do you think the Naval Academy has the same size linemen as some of the other D1 schools they play against (I should look this up, but am too lazy right now).

The reason I compare the various teams at the school is for recruiting: I realize you need more players for football than other teams, but I assure you that if the other teams are able to pull in some very good talent then the football team should be able to do the same.

I'm simply of the mind that the football team has the potential to be better than they have been over the past few years. Whether this has to do with coaching (eg wrong offensive scheme for the type of players available), recruiting, injuries, or lack of talent I don't know. I do know they can be better though.

Does anyone know if the coaches are paid equally given their level of experience? Does a first year soccer coach receive the same salary as a first year football coach? Have men's teams been affected by Title IX problems?

We live in Peapack-Gladstone, right next to Bridgewater and Bedminster. Feel free to give us a holler.

2012kpmam:

As they are federal employees you could likely find their salary; otherwise I really don't know the answer to your question. Most of the assistant coaches around school have other jobs such as sports information, etc. When I was at school one of our assistant coaches actually lived in the basement of O'hara with a couple other coaches. That should give you an idea as to the pay the young coaches there get. (actually they may not be federal employees if they are paid from donations.....not sure where the funds for coaches salaries come from as much of the athletic dept is supplemented by donations)

Title IX I am sure has had some effect on the athletic programs there...the most recent change I can think of in this regard was the addition of a women's basketball team while I was there. I have not heard any complaints of men's teams dissapearing like I have at some DI schools.

I believe!

BEAT COAST GUARD!!!!!

Kp2001 - I do understand what your are saying about the Navel Academy, but they are D1 program recruiting the same players as other schools. West Point is in the same situation, except if you every get a chance to see WestPoints weight room, it is unbelievable. When My son and I were there they were breaking ground on there indoor facilty and starting constuction on a players lounge. But lets be confident KP will turn things around.

nmlcp - I will do that some time when the weekend trips start. I will be making the trip on this coming Thursday to take care of some business on Friday in NY, but I will arrive late and leave early and drive back home on Friday.

I'm looking forward to some great parent support. Go Mariners!!!!

That is definately one area I can agree with you on.....the weight facilities at Kings Point are a joke. At one time there was talk of building a new weight room, but I think it has been put on hold pending some increased funding/donations.

I'm sure my high school team could beat our team which is terrible. I also feel that the team is given too much money for the results they produce, if they were good maybe ticket sales would boost?

i agree with kp2001, the wight room at KP is absolutely pathetic and overwhelmingly inadequate. my junior high had a more respectable weight room than KP. considering how much use it gets, they should use spend the money they waste on football so everyone can appreciate and enjoy it

eatsleepsail and USMMA2009: I understand your frustration with the amount of money that football "gets"; however, you must remember that most of the money that runs the athletic department is from donations. A football team takes a lot of money to run simply due to the numbers of players needed and the equipment used. I wouldn't consider the money spent on the football team a "waste."

If you play a sport and want to see it get more money then be sure to remember that when you graduate and send some of your money back to the sport. You can earmark your donations for particular things such as individual sports. You can also ask your parents, grandparents, etc to donate money earmarked for the team you want.

You can also get people to donate items: when I was there one midshipmen had his father donate new billiard balls for the game room because the others were in such bad shape.
