Foothill / De Anza UC Transfer 2015 Thread (Quarter CC's)

Hi Everyone!

I just found out that there are only 3 California community colleges in the state that are in the Quarter system (correct me if I’m wrong). I was very surprised by this! This means that students attending Foothill College, De Anza College, and Lake Tahoe City College are of uniqie nature in the UC application pool. We are the the only students who have winter quarter before decisions role out (while semester schools have winter intercession during their winter break). Foothill-Deanza are sister colleges and may even be considered the “Harvard” of community colleges in California. While quarter system may be tougher, the good thing is that all of the UC’s, except UC Berkeley and UC Merced, are on quarter system as well. So unit transfer should be a lot easier then semester schools, no?

This thread is for students attending any of these colleges. Post you stats, major, where you applied to, and decisions, etc, as well as any experiences, problems, or questions you may have.

Santa Monica seems to have 6 Week, 8 Week, 12 Week, 16 week sessions. WOW! But either way, I thinks its Semester.

Yeah, SMC is semester. I deleted because I made a mistake.

(Or let’s put it this way, I probably found the same page you did and it only noted your three CCCs. Someone from SMC may want to weigh in on the multiple SMC sessions.)

aaaaay, i attend both de anza and foothill!

Being on the same quarter/semester system can help if you complete a partial sequence of courses, transfer, and then complete the rest of the sequence, so that you are less likely to have mismatched course boundaries.

Otherwise, units are translated as 1 semester unit = 1.5 quarter units, or 1 quarter unit = 2/3 semester unit.

De Anza 2nd year here. I just wonder if we’ll be able to affect our admission decision with our updated Winter quarter grades, or if all the decisions will be made by then. I got a D+ in a class during Fall which I am about to ace next week.
I just have a bad feeling about it having a decent effect on my admissions.

@GroveStreetParty‌ let them know NOW! Email your uc admissions (each campus). Tell them you know it’s late in the game but you have an A. Having D+ is not good.

I thought every CC was the same. Where did you get that “Harvard” thing LOL

@Sandwich94 De Anza and Foothill are known for having really high transfer rates. From the lists I’ve heard, the sister schools would take 1 and 2 out of all of the community colleges in the state for transfer rates(De Anza College being 1 and Foothill College being 2).

Sorry, but I think SMC has got you there.

The transfer rate for De Anza and SMC are around the same actually. The amount of students SMC pumps out is the highest out of any CCC since they have so many students but rates are relatively equal.
Data is a bit outdated so I could be wrong.

Wow, I can’t believe there isn’t more recent data. 5 years is a long time.

Santa Monica is number one. Let’s not parse it lol
The UCs, when announcing their CCC Task Force last year, cited SMC as #1.

2010 stats:
SMC - 1053
DeAnza - 666
Deablo Valley - 663
Santa Barbara CC - 609
Foothill - 285

And using percentages of admits vs applicants is valuable to show a student they have an equal chance, but by that assessment, you would be forced to say a CCC that had three applicants and all three got in (100% admit rate) was the number one CCC.

Foothill and deanza are still in the tippy-top tier, though, so all is good.

I agree, a CCC with only three applicants wouldn’t be statistically significant (no discernible pattern in the data). I didn’t mean to say De Anza has the same rank as SMC.
I was just addressing the transfer rates (though now I’m not sure if transfer rates means admits/year or admits/applicants) to show, as you said, that students have an equal chance as both CCs.

lol. Debating over which CC’s on top won’t get us anywhere. I admit, “Harvard” was pretty biased by me, though I did see it mentioned in an article I can’t seem to find now…

I’m really surprised by SMC and their flexible sessions of 6, 8, 12, and 16 week sessions. Thats awesome!

Also, Foothill and Deanza are practically the same college, though they don’t want to be considered “same”. They are known as FHDA, and most students attend both colleges. I’m not sure about other CC’s, but foothill is now hosting bachelors programs at its college itself, so they growing REALLY big now??

What really impresses me is the online platform used by Foothill. It, etudes, was actually first designed by a professor at Foothill College: Michael Loceff – and I here this platform is being used across the state. I here students around the world attend Foothill now just simply by taking it’s online classes.

Regarding our winter grades, we quarter students are probably indeed a major exception. I received the following message from UC Irvine.

I replied stating that I won’t get grades until end of arch or beginning of April. They responded requesting me to send them as soon as they become available. So it may be that I’m borderline and they will base decision on final Winter Grades… Either way I really do hope they accept me as I believe I hold high potential in my major!!

Has anyone else received communications from any UC’s in regards to their winter quarter / grades or anything else?

I attend mainly Foothill with about 12 units from De Anza. Haven’t gotten anything at all asking for my winter grades or anything. I finished all of my prereqs and the breadth requirements for UC Berkeley Haas, UCLA, and UCD by the time I applied though.

@muslimun‌ I would assume you are borderline.

Re superiority of CCCs I’m not knocking any of these at all – SBCC, SMC, deanza, foothill, diablo valley are all considered the very top ones. You can’t go wrong with any of them. I just threw my two cents into the mix when there started to be a competition. And SMC is really focused on UCLA.

@muslimun‌ if you don’t mind, can you share your stats with us?
