(For a friend) Columbia 3-2 program+pet policy

Hi all,

My friend has decided she is going to go to Scripps in the fall after being admitted RD, but she wants to know about the Columbia 3-2 program and the pet policy in the dorms (and housing in general lol).

Regarding the Columbia 3-2 program: How does she get started? Talk to a counselor? What next? How does it work?

Housing
-Do people choose their own dorms, or does the school assign them?
-What should she bring?
-Can students own pets? Are fish, birds, and amphibians ok?

Thanks in advance for the answers!

For first years the school assigns a dorm and roommate. Each year after that, you can pick your roommate(s) and select a dorm. Of course, seniors get first choice and down the line. Within a class choice order is selected randomly.

She should bring anything she would take to any college:clothes, bedding, toiletries, school supplies. She may want to bring a bike, but it’s not necessary. She won’t need heavy winter clothes, but a few warm items might be useful as the late nights can get chilly. She could bring a microwave and/or fridge but again, not necessary. My D hasn’t had either in 3 years and gets along fine without them (all the dorms have kitchens). One dorm she was in was dark so a floor lamp came in handy but it was only used the one time. If she’s traveling a great distance I would wait until she got settle in to see what she really needs and buy them there.

I’m not sure the pet policy. I think some might be okay and others might be okay , only if you get permission from everyone else on your floor. You’d have to check with the school for sure.

No pets allowed at Columbia or Barnard. I get the impression Scripps does allow pets, at least people have been talking on other threads abroad bringing birds with them.

At Scripps, fish and small animals humanely contained in a small cage (I forget the dimensions) are okay. Birds can be allowed if you get everybody in the hall to approve (not likely to happen). You can apply for emotional support animals with a letter from your doctor, which would allow you to bring larger animals like dogs and cats.
