For a major like Poli Sci or Sociology...

Is it better to go to a state school rather than a UC? In my case UCD.

In my opinion you’d be better off at a UC. I don’t have ranks/stats on hand or anything, but the UCs are better at the social sciences in general.

State school if you want direct to job degrees like Accounting, Marketing, Etc…

the best thing to do is contact the departments at both schools and talk to them. see which one feels better for you and offers courses that you are interested in. it’s your turn to put them through the application process. :)

take note that a lot of people major in political science and sociology, so going to a state school isn’t going to wow employers or grad schools unless you have a strong gpa. if you go to a UC, you’re probably geared to apply to grad school or law school later on so focus primarily on your grades. State schools are beneficial for degrees like business or accounting as stated above. San Luis Obispo and University of San Diego are good to look into for a business oriented career.

Yeah you guys are right. Thanks for the heads up. And yeah… I am thinking about grad school or law school.

State schools aren’t automatically better than the UCs. Even if the overall rankings rate a school as better doesn’t mean it is. It really depends on a specific major, there are some cases where a major at a state school is better than the same major at a few of the UCs.

Cal has a good Sociology program. But the best way is to check out the department and the individual professors in that specific department. Also, you should check out what type of courses are offered. Like for Sociology, maybe you are interested in Social Psychology or Sociology of the Family or Economic Sociology. Some schools may offer these courses and other schools may not offer the courses you might be interested in.
