For all the UCLA and UCB nail biters.

I was accepted to UCLA (political science) the day admissions came out.

I have a 3.37 GPA

Pretty low, right?

I searched these boards up and down and was bothered by all the people who ask "will I get in" with a 4.0 GPA, typically so that they could stroke their ego. I felt the minorty - or maybe the silent majority - never spoke up. I thought I should do that.

So, if you are waitlisted, and feel like you are borderline, know that it is possible to get in.

My (detailed) info:

I did do TAP, but I also applied as political science, which is very impacted.

I have worked as a political consultant (glorified intern, really) and taught teens in rough parts of Oakland how to write resumes and cover letters (amongst other things)

My essay was decent and somewhat unique. Although, it probably wasn't perfect.

I transfered from CCSF

I got A's in all my major classes except for one

I got one C (in a 5 unit course)

My grades trended down (yep.)

I had a close mix of A's and B's (more A's though)

I finished all my pre-req's

Well said. I wouldn’t say GPA = a high intelligence, but it does show a strong work ethic. It’s only part of the equation.

I dont know about UCLA, but at UCB, Polisci is not impacted. If your admission GPA is any hint, I would say UCLA Polisci is not impacted either.

GL tomorrow

I’m from CCSF and I’m a nail bitter I guess then I was rejected from UCLA with a 3.78 and TAP, so I’m hoping for Cal tomorrow but I doubt it.

i thought poli sci was impacted? especially since the transfer admit rate is competitive for social sciences.

@jayray: i think that even people with a high gpa have a right to question their chances just as much as anyone else. it doesn’t have anything to do with ego (after all, we are all just screen names to each other on here, so why would that matter?).
we all know that even people with 4.0’s are not ensured to be accepted. in fact, look at all the people with high gpas who were rejected from UCLA, and look tomorrow to see all those who will be rejected by cal.

i’m pretty sure some admissions decisions at berkeley are decided by coin toss.

Poli Sci is impacted but it seems they were particularly lenient for that major this year. A lot of kids got in with < 3.5 GPAs.

@floobnoobs dude…trust me, polisci is impacted. All them lawyers :)

Overall, I’d like to thank the OP for this post, he has a good point. I think the reason he isn’t seeing as many low gpa’s in here is that they usually spend too much time NOT worrying about school. Whereas, all the 3.8-4.0 people spend TOO much time worrying about school haha. Still, I think we all need to remember that in the real world, not EVERYONE has a 3.8+ (or even needs it to get in).

^^^agree with xyzzyz, some decisions are either decided by a coin toss or a game of darts…

Hey everyone! Let’s degrade the topic poster by making it seem like getting in to UCLA PoliSci is no big deal!

I feel better about myself now!

hey, that means that if admissions decisions are decided by coin toss…i have a 50/50 chance!

i feel better now. =)

hey don’t hate on ucla polisci i know a couple kids who did not get in with a 3.7+…
