For big state schools, is it just "all about the numbers"?

My cousin, whose son is at U Maryland, says that she is convinced that the public school look onto to the GPA/SATs...if you meet the cutoff, you're in (or out). I'm hoping for more. (My son is looking at a number of large, public universities, and has some wonderful sport/music/leadership/other awards stuff.) Does anyone really know how important the ECs/interests are to the application? And how about the essays?

Thanks for any insight!

In general, public schools are more number-based than private schools. But that does not mean that they don't care about anything else. Make sure the rest of your application is just as good.

State schools definitely weigh the SAT much, much more heavily than privates.

I know UGA weighs GPA over anything else.
