I'm currently a freshman at UGA and am willing to answer any questions you may have about academics, greek, social, or anything else you may be wondering about the University of Georgia at Athens. I know that last year I used these boards pretty heavily for information so I figured I would try to give that back.

Feel free to reply with any questions and I will attempt to reply promptly.

Thanks Space10045!
I am to submit my app for RD soon, and I was wondering how they really weigh the stats? that is SATs/Grades/ECs?
If the SATs are not brilliant but the GPA and ECs are better, do they continue to read the rest of the appl, the essays, etc?

To my knowledge they look at "the whole package" when making all decisions. When they look at an app they look at your High school GPA first, the difficulty of your curriculum (which is assigned a rating), your SAT of ACT score, then any applicable EC's and your essays. While extremely low academic scores might get you knocked off quick I don't think they make any calls until they read through everything. SO make sure to give your best effort on those essays. Write them yourself (making sure to stay true to the theme) then have your parents proofread them and do any necessary revisions, and then I reccommend asking your English Teacher to take another look. Most are happy to do this and ussually glad you decided to come to them for help. If you have a good GPA, mediocre SAT Scores, but have demonstrated that you are a leader in your clubs or have had to work throughout high school you are going to be given a strong consideration.

Personally I know a lot of guys who had good GPA's, 1100 on the SAT, but were President of clubs or something along those lines. It happens... As much as UGA wants the brightest, they also want leaders that are going to make a name for themselves and doing so, the University.

That's nice of you, Space. From what I've seen, that kind of civility typifies UGA students-- must have something to do with the southern culture- Bible Belt upbringing! :)

Do a lot of people leave campus on weekends? How good is the partying? Any idea how easy the transition is like from living on campus freshman year to moving off campus sophmore year which I have heard many people do?

db9golf to quote my response to the similar question on going home on the weekends in the Dorms thread, "I'd say that the majority of people stay for the weekends but there are a definite few that go home every weekend. If you want to hang around there are ussually a lot of people still on campus. I'd say the only weekends where most people went home were like the first weekend w/o a football game, fall and thanksgiving break, and after exams."

Partying is as good as you want it to be. I really believe there's something for everyone. There's parties at apartments all throughout the week, fraternities normally have parties on the weekends, and I've gone downtown on tuesday nights (the Bar scene is very good if you havn't heard).

Most of my friends moved off campus after freshman year. The ones in my fraternity didn't have so hard of a time with it, but some that arn't in fraternities or sororities generally have a little harder time. I know one girl who really hates not being around everyone "in the dorms," but most people get good roommates and do alright. Just make sure to become friends with as many people as you can in the dorms and it should be fine. Also remember that most apartments arn't that far from campus. (walking distance and on the bus route)

I know that housing is at a shortage at UGA and that freshmen often move off campus before their sophomore year. What about the sophomores who don't want to move off campus.......what are their odds of getting a dorm room? Thanks!

I don't think that's true, UGA guarentees housing for Freshman and you are required to live on campus throughout your freshman year.

Recently I received an e-mail asking to fill out an online application if I planned to live on campus next year. Basically it stated that If i applied by January 20th or something like that I would be guarenteed housing for next year, if I didn't I would NOT receive housing. So I say the odds are pretty good.

Space,
Thanks for doing this. I am still not 100% sure that I'll be coming to UGA. I loved Athens and the school when I visited though. Do you know much about the Honors program and the kids in it? Are they pretty cool? Is the Honors dorm good? Should I stay in it ( I got in Honors). I want to be in Honors, but have a nice...mmm.... mixture of friends too. :) Can 18 year olds get into the music clubs downtown? THANKS!!

No problem, a lot of people did the same for me last year.

I know quite a few people in the Honors program and they all seem to enjoy it.

The Meyers dorm is very nice (as patel pointed out), but not all Honors kids live there. It has a reputation for being quite a bit quieter and more of the "nerdy" kids on campus. That is a generalization though from experience, I have a few fraternity brothers that lived there and while they didn't love it, they find it pretty nice. The rooms are bigger (and nicer), general facility is nice, have the quad right outside where theres always being playing football or ultimate frisbee (real big), right next to the South Parking deck, and right across the street from Snelling and major bus stops.

Although if you're looking for a little better balance and to meet more people that (again a generalization) are competant in school work, but also enjoy having a good time you might want to consider one of the other freshman dorms. I personally know several honors students in Russell that do fine.

As far as the music venues downtown I believe most places you can get in under 21 and just get your hands x'd but this varies from place to place. Without going into detail I will just say that the downtown Athens music/bar scence really is a huge advantage of going to UGA.

Sorry to be an interloper here but I wanted to clairfy something about the housing situation: you are definitely guaranteed and required to have on-campus housing all freshman year. After that, you have to reapply for housing (unless, like me, you completely forget and get kicked off campus) and then things like credit hours really impact that. I know some of my friends who took 12 hours didn't get back into housing while those who took 14 or 15 did, so be aware of that.

Patel: Yes, UGA does have a pre-pharmacy program, as well as a pretty good pharmacy school too.

mahleah: Myers is a great place; while the quality of the students is really high, at the same time people are relatively relaxed and into the same things everyone else at UGA is into; it's just that alongside discussions of football, ultimate frisbee, and partying come critiques of postmodernism and maybe a few arguments in Latin. Honors as a whole is great, but is really what you want to make of it- it provides resources and support for students who want to use them, but even though they do a great job of making sure you know about all the opportunities it's still up to students to take advantage.

And anyways yeah if anyone has any more questions about UGA Honors I can probably answer a few of those, but Space's done a great job with the other ones so far so I dont' want to intrude.

Space, Vig, and Patel,
Thanks so much for all the great information! Vig... are you in the Honors program? Great description! Love it!
What about the campus busses? Where all do they take you? Just campus? Or further around town?
Do y'all know if out of state students find out about all scholarships in Jan.?
Thanks again!

You're welcome maleahhpluvr, and thank you for the information vig... also thanks to you too space for answering useful questions on this thread.

Vig I completely welcome you in here, I can't hit everything and I'm sure there are some things I just don't even know. Plus I'm not in the Honors program (just know quite a few people in it, so you might be better suited for those questions if you indeed are).

"What about the campus busses? Where all do they take you? Just campus? Or further around town?"

The Campus Bus system is pretty good. Theres a lot of different routes that will take you all over campus which is useful if you have a class in 15 minutes on the complete opposite end of campus or if you're just feeling lazy. While the UGA buses just cover campus, as a student you also have access to the Athens Bus Transport system for free which will take you pretty much anywhere you need to get...the route schedule is a little more complicated though and takes a little research online before you just hop on a bus most of the time.

"Do y'all know if out of state students find out about all scholarships in Jan.?"

No idea on that, sorry.

"Does UGA offer Pre-Pharmacy or would I just have to major in Chemistry if I'm interested in becoming a Pharmacist?"

I"m pretty sure that our Pre-pharmacy program is pretty good but Pre programs are not a major. No matter where you go you will have to major in something besides pre-pharmacy. The Pre track just allows you to register for classes to prepare you for a professional program that fits into the classes you have to take for your major.

I have a friend in the Pharmacy school here and he seems pretty happy with it. The building is pretty nice from what i've seen and located on a pretty convienent spot on campus.

Also, since I was deferred for EA (mainly because of my SAT/ACT scores), I finished the second part of the application in order to apply for RD. They already got my teacher recommendation form as well as the Part II being done completely. I had very nice written essays with zero grammar errors, wasn't redundant or anything, etc. I have a great GPA, fairly good class rank (top 6%), but the only thing that really, really kicks my butt is... SAT/ACT scores as you'll have heard me say in other threads and as I had previously stated above in this post. My total M/CR was a 970. Fairly sad, I know. I'm planning on retaking the January 26th SAT, and I hope to at least make a 1200 on the M/CR combined. To most here, that seems like nothing, but I seem to struggle with those kind of standardized tests. Another question is... does anyone personally know someone/some people that were accepted with fairly low SAT/ACT scores. By the way, my ACT scores were 21 Composite, 22 English, and 23 Math.

I know a guy at UGA right now who had a 1000 SAT. He had nearly a 4.0 GPA and he's Asian. He also took all honors and AP at a major metro ATL high school.

A friend of mine from my school graduated last year and is attending UGA right now. He had a 1490/2400 total, all three combined, as well as 3.6 or 3.7 GPA, black male, played basketball, and he was accepted.
