I think it’s pretty pointless to buy declining balance if you already have a credit card. I had the 7 day unlimited plan for the past two semesters, and I plan to continue because I live right off campus so it’s convenient. Also, I Big Man, so I eat three times a day and a healthy portion each time. I think a good rule of thumb is to see how much you eat now at home (not at all-you-can-eat buffets) and that is how much you’ll eat at the dining hall. A good amount of students come in thinking that they’ll eat SO much, but they tend to eat the least after a while (or they become obese and have to drop the meal plan).

use your debit card. thats my recommendation. definitely DO NOT buy the meal plan before you get there.

go the first two weeks without a meal plan, and then if you find that you’re eating there 3 times a day, or that you really want to eat there 3 times a day, then definitely get a meal plan. if you find you’re only eating there twice a day, then maybe get the 150 meal plan.

if you find you’re only eating there 3 times every 2 days, or any combination that is less than 2 meals a day, i would say to pass on the meal plan. a lot of people get sick of the dining hall over time, or find out they prefer cooking or eating off campus, or something else. plenty of people don’t get sick of it and eat there 3 times a day. don’t make a decision until you know which category you will fall under.

2 meals a day is my magic number. i did the calculations a loooong time ago so its just an estimation. if you want a better idea of what plan to get, if any, do the math yourself a few weeks in. if it comes out to costing you $8-9/meal with the meal plan, don’t get the meal plan.

I should have said that I do eat a lot. I am 5’11" and only weigh 145lbs. So I need to put on some weight. I currenty eat 4 meals per day. But I am sure that when I start school 3 meals a day will be the most I will eat.

By the sounds of the above posts? It sounds like if the student is a big eater, he or she should get on the meal plan? is the correct?

How much do you save on a meal plan vs. paying with a debit/credit card?
