For early admits

A piece of advice for anyone admitted early action - I highly recommend going to the first Choices program. The first program is for early admits only, so it is less crowded and more personal than the later Choices programs. I have to say, it was Choices that made up my DDs mind for her. She had actually put a deposit in on another school, but after the CHoices program, and talking to several professors and department heads, changed her mind. She has been very happy and the school has lived up to everything she thought it would be.

Thank you momofa12 for that information. We are going to the Choices program in February because we need to refresh our memories about JMU. I would love my D to go there but she is stuck on Penn State. We will be re-visiting several schools to help in making the decision.

@carly135…my S is also stuck on Penn State…we are revisiting both that same weekend in Feb…may I ask if your daughter received scholarship $ to Penn State yet?

Yes, she did receive the Provost award- $6k per year so that certainly helps. All these schools are so expensive! We are OOS for both Penn State and JMU.

We are also re-visiting Penn State that same week in February as the Choices program at JMU.

@carly135…we are OOS too…and sadly my son did not get Provost…we are going to PSU on Feb 15 and then JMU on Monday…

We are just waiting on UMD decisions before we make final commitment.

Full time job this is!!!

My daughter chose JMU over Penn State and we are in state for PSU. She just decided it was too big for her. But its a great school!

We are going to JMU on Monday 2/18 and PSU on Thursday 2/21. We are also waiting for UMD decision on 1/31. Your son may like JMU since it is 60/40 ratio female/male! The Provost award was a total surprise. It will certainly keep Penn State in the running. Really wondering if she will get any merit from JMU. Hoping that she gets accepted to UMD but it will throw a wrench into the decision!

I went to Penn State for grad school and teach at JMU. Visiting both will help to get a sense of which might be a better fit. The campus vibe and school size is so different. :-)

carly 135 – My DD received the Provost’s award too. We are IS for Penn State, but OOS for JMU. I would love my DD to go to JMU, since I went there. Without the provost award, JMU & Penn State would be almost the same. With the Provost, Penn State is cheaper. The lack of endowment at JMU means little or not help for OOS. Waiting for Richmond yet–DD went ED II. If she doesn’t get in, we will have a difficult choice!

Good luck to your D swimmom. Sounds like Penn State is a good deal for you. If my D did not get the Provost, would have crossed PSU off the list because too expensive. I’m hoping for some money from JMU but know it’s not likely. I heard the male/female ratio at JMU is like 40/60 or even worse which does not sit well with my D so it may be a deal-breaker! Can anyone comment on this ratio and if it affected their JMU experience? I’ve heard you can find your bridesmaids at JMU but not your groom- LOL

carly135 - My DD was originally planning on swimming in college but has since changed her mind. One of our recruiting visits was to Washington & Lee. When she did her admissions interview, I commented to the counselor that when I was at JMU everyone went down to W&L to find a boyfriend because it was all male at the time. She responded that JMU was about 70/30 now, and she has heard that guys from the Naval Academy go to JMU looking for girls! Certainly sounds like a lot of females!!

I think my son will love JMU then!!!
