Early Action Decisions Posted!

Just looked at my D's MyMadison. Here decision is posted--Accepted! As an alum I am very excited!!

Thank you swimmom! Thank goodness the waiting is over!

I just checked my Son’s. He is accepted!! Thanks swimmom!

My D was ACCEPTED!!!

I checked my myMadison and saw I was accepted! I am beyond excited. Did any of you get emails though? I thought we would get an email when decisions were posted but haven’t received one yet, but myMadison says Admitted.

No email here. I just happened to check her page.

DS is admitted…sounds very competitive based on the letter. He is very excited. We are OOS, anyone know anything about scholarships, merit$$$? Congrats to all and for those deferred, I know last year in our town, most deferrals were accepted RD.

deferred with a 2020 SAT and a 4.0 GPA. what is life

I don’t think scholarships are announced until March.

I just went to the JMU website and it says scholarship notification in April.

Thanks, carj4kids. We have so many schools that are floating around in my head that I cant’ remember specific scholarship dates :)

No problem. We are in the same boat, it is hard to keep track if it all.

Accepted!!!

D is in. I’m so glad. I really love JMU.
I hope I can say that again next year with S14!

Congrats to all who’ve received their EA acceptances!

My S was accepted to JMU as an EA applicant last year and was accepted as an MT major as well (1 of 10 audition-select spots), but declined. We all loved JMU, but as an OOS student, unfortunately, there are few merit scholarship offers and they don’t amount to much when you’re facing $30K+ Cost of Attendance as an OOS student. The Dingledine Scholarship is the largest JMU offers, equivalent to full-year in-state tuition for all 4 years. Applicants must meet specific academic criteria in order to apply (1200 out of 1600 on SAT, top 25% of your class, 3.5 GPA unweighted). You must complete a separate application for it and the deadline I believe is early November. It is also heavily weighted on service to others. 2 essays and 2 letters of recommendation must accompany your application. All students are considered for Madison Achievement Scholarships (about 300 awards), which range from $2K-$5K. My S had already been admitted to the school before he completed his MT audition, so he at least knew going into the audition he’d been accepted to JMU. The Dept. makes it very clear to auditioners that you must be accepted academically to the school before you will be considered for acceptance into the MT program. You can still audition, but no matter how much the Theater Dept. may want to make you an offer, you must pass the academic acceptance hurdle first.

He didn’t receive a Dingledine (I believe 8-10 awards are made to the incoming class; all finalists must attend in-person interview). He also didn’t receive a Madison Achievement, though academically he met all criteria. The school receives over 22K+ applications for admission and admits roughly 12-13K students, so you do the math regarding scholarship chances. JMU would’ve ended up costing us more as an OOS student at a public university than at a private college with higher scholarship offers.

My S was fortunate to receive offers from other schools that were more affordable for us as a family, many of them from OOS private colleges/universities. The distance from home was a big factor in his decision as well. While he LOVED the school, it was 6-7 hours away from home (northern NJ), and as an MT student whose family has been very supportive of him, it would be difficult to travel see him in any shows he’d be in. He chose a school in NYC (1 hour away), one which was among his top choices, had an audition-select MT program, gave him his highest scholarship offer (more than 1/2 the Cost of Attendance) and acceptance to their Honors College.

We’d always said if we lived in VA, or if JMU were closer to home, it’s probably where he would have landed. He still talks about the food there; JMU is ranked as one of the “Best College Food” schools in the country. Their brand new Performing Arts Center is gorgeous and the envy of many college Performing Arts programs. We know many students who’ve attended and graduated from JMU and all of them have nothing but great things to say about the school.

Best of luck to all who’ve applied, especially any MT hopefuls!

DramaMama what a nice thoughtful post. My kids are not MT (thankfully… talk about added stress…) but its great information for those who are, and I would give you a “puff” for it if I were allowed to do so (the 2013 thread calls the scales “puffs”).

My D is auditioning this month. Fingers and toes crossed…

accepted! out of state, 3.6 W and 1830 SAT… but i took that SAT in november so i think they didnt count it. my SAT before that was 1720.

good luck everyone!!

I didn’t get an email, but I randomly checked the applicant center this morning and I was admitted!

ACCEPTED! so pumped
