For Freshmen: Dorm Questions

I have applied early to SCU and should get my letter any day, but I have some questions about the dorms. What is it like sharing the bathrooms with the whole floor? Also, what kind of things can you do/not do to your rooms? Move stuff? Other people in the room? Etc. Thanks

i should get my letter any day now too, do we HAVE to do the RLC thing? Are there kids who don't do it?

Im sorry, what is RLC?

Residential Learning Community

Re the dorms...the ones we saw have sinks in the rooms so that you are only going down the hall for showers and toilets. It's a pain, but it's doable. There is not as much congestion as you would think because everyone is on a different schedule. It's rare to have to wait for a shower.

Check out the RLC info on the website. I don't remember if you have to be a part of one or not.

Yes Freshmen have to be members of a Residential Learning Community. There are many to choose from and they are housed in the different dorms. DD was in one last year, and is in a different one this year as a sophomore. It gives the dorms a "theme" of sorts. You can read about them on the website. Re: the rooms...DD's room both last and this year are quite nice, spacious, and have very ample storage space. Her current dorm was renovated last summer and AC was put in as well as carpeting, and new vanities for the sinks with nice drawers and composite stone counter tops. In this RLC, the furniture is all movable including the freestanding closets. The previous RLC had nice size closets (built in) with a built in set of drawers and shelves. Desks, beds and the freestanding bookcases were movable. SCU does a fabulous job of maintaining their facilities, including their dorms. Re: the hallway bathrooms...DD says you get used to it. It's nice to be able to wash your face, and brush your teeth in your own room. Oh..in some of the RLCs you may find you need to go to a different floor to shower. The floors are coed but each floor's bathroom is single gender. DD lived on a floor that had the guy's bathroom. She had to go up or down to shower..but so did all the rest of the girls on her floor!! That is not the case for her this year.

What RLC's are you talking about? Also, what are some things that students do during their downtime?

Last year, my daughter lived in McLaughlin, and this year she lives in Campisi. McLaughlin is right next to the student center...very convenient. Campisi is next to the athletic facility and pool. The campus is very compact...nothing is very far from anything else. The new library opens in April...and there will be a new aquatic center opening in the fall.

zwilliams, the campus is active. Lots of kids doing lots of different sorts of things. Directly across the street is a train station that can take you North to San Francisco so students make use of that for off campus. Santa Cruz is 30 minutes or so over the hill and there are some decent places to shop and eat in Santa Clara and San Jose. Was there anything specific you were looking for?

If you dont want to walk down the hall and share showers with people, apply to Casa Italiana or Sobrato, they are suite style rooms, and you have private bathrooms that you share only with your 6-8 suitemates. Rooms are definitely the nicest on campus.
