Planning to take SAT again!
Chance @berkely/UCLA/UCSD/UCI???? pliz

^^

UCB, UCLA both reaches.

UCSD slight reach.

UCI: In.

UCI:match
UCSD:reach
Berkeley and UCLA: big reach

I'd say you have a better chance at private colleges than Berkeley or UCLA. The latter two depend heavily on numbers, like GPA and SAT. Your musical achievements could appeal great to Stanford, Pomona, etc.

allorion, I think those numbers enough could have gotten you into Harvard, MIT, Stanford, etc.
What's your intended major?

Heh, it didn't quite get those that on your list that I applied to, but it did get some good ones I suppose. Berkeley isn't exactly that far down the list--but it's less than a 1/3 of the financial strain. :D

Economics, philosophy, and business administration, if I get the last. If I don't, I still have my other two intended. We'll see if I can pull it off or die in the attempt. chuckle

I wouldn't rule Manfredman out entirely, if his cello achievements are significant enough. However, BlueElmo is right that your GPA and SAT will hurt you, since Berkeley, as holistic as it is now, wants you to have high numbers nonetheless.

my gpa was similar and i played the piano well, so im now a cal student yay!
but anyways, i did send in a studio-recorded CD for their reference, maybe that made a difference

Well, it does make sense if you think about it.

The admissions officers have perhaps six or seven (I'm understimating it, yes) students with high GPAs and SATs, and relatively minor achievements (hosted a pasta feed, tutored small children, was in band, coached a little league team); then they have an award-studded, nationally recognized musician (and in his case, in a rather uncommon instrument)...

What would be your choice if you were them?

The only thing with Berkeley is it'll have a higher bar for whether your achievements outweigh your somewhat lower scores.

However, rising senior? I'd suggest that he retakes his SAT, perhaps to boost it around 7XX range. It would simply be better for both applying to Berkeley and his other colleges.

Psh, cello isn't an uncommon instrument. ;)

I jest, I jest. I agree with Allorian wholeheartedly; my application was nothing special as an asian instate male besides a couple of essay topics that I doubt too many other high schoolers wrote about (baseball and fly fishing) and a bunch of county and state awards for playing another of those instruments some would call uncommon, the bassoon. :)

You don't have to be a genius to get into Cal. I was accepted with a 650 SAT II Math 2C (550 the first time, I know, I suck at math), a 4.15 weighted gpa, and numerous B's (even one C) in high school. However, this isn't to say that my acceptance hinged solely on one extracurricular "talent". I scored a couple of 5's on AP tests in classes where I got B's, and I tested decently on the SAT (2250). This combined with the bassoon combined with the weird interests probably made me look pretty well-rounded to the admissions officers, and let's face it, a lot of asians applying to berkeley pretty much fit the same mold. Just another perspective shrug

2250 is way better than decent haha

Woah the people's ranks are kind of scaring me. Can someone evaluate my chances real quick just to make sure?

SAT: 1990
ACT: 29
Rank: top 9%
Taking the hardest courses I can (4 AP's)
From Illinois

I know I have to get those test scores higher.. OH and I'm applying for ENGINEERING which would make it harder?

OOS from Indiana to School of Chemistry

Rank - 2/280
GPA - 4.56/4.33 (school doesn't calculate UW)
ACT - 35
SAT - 2380 (780 math)
SAT II - Physics 770
Math IIc 750
U.S. History 780

Barely any EC's.

Cyrone...if you are out-of-state, I'd say you have to raise your SAT, your ACT, and your rank by a lot. my friend applied from out-of-state as a female engineer with an equivalent of a 2350 SAT, a 4.0, 8 APs, and ranked 3rd in her class, and was REJECTED. Yes, rejected. She got and 800, 780 and 750 on her SAT IIs, and a 35 on her ACT. REJECTED!!

Daniel...decent. I'm not sure if the College of Chemistry looks for ECs as much as L&S.Just amaze them by writing about one EC in your personal statement.

No, I got accepted. The OP asked for acceptees to post their stats.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! I got my transcript today and fell a few spots from being rank 1!!!!!!!!!!! :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Will UC's look at the first grading period of senior year (which ends in late October)??? If they don't my rank will still the same!!!!!! :( :( I will get all A's and hopefully my rank will move up but will UC's look at the grades from the grading period?!!!!!!!!!!!

Daniel..oops. I thought you were going along with Cyrone's post about evaluation...but yeah, see I told you your stats were decent. :p

No, they do not look at the first grading period of senior year.

I did too many applications to remember that well each, but if I remember correctly, UCs have self-reported grades up to junior year. Or at least I remember that if you're on the semester system, they don't see your senior grades due to how early they ask for them.

Anyway though, for the rank issue--I dropped a rank during senior year, and it didn't matter for me in the end. I wouldn't worry about dropping a single rank. Dropping 32 ranks or something, I might start being worried--but that's because that would reflect a rather significant drop in grades.

UCs do NOT base their evaluation of you on ranks--UC GPA only.

Honestly, people really overestimate what it takes to get into UCLA/UCB on this forum. Then again you could apply that to any college. The average SAT at UCLA is like 2030 or so and Berkeley is only like 20 pts higher or so at like 2050. Average UC GPA according to the UC website is 4.12 at Cal and 4.11 at UCLA. You dont have to have a 2200 to get into top UCs, that is for in state of course.

Okay, since everyone is throwing in their chance requests, I'll do mine.

UC GPA- 4.19
UW GPA- 4.87
SATs- 720 writing and eng., 650 math- 2090 total
SATIIs (will retake)- 700 math II, 660 Lit

1 year Co-president of CSF, 1 year vice president
2 years volunteer coaching for AYSO, 1 year co-head coach
4 years mock trial
3 years JV soccer, 1 year captain
Interact member
2 weeks in Tijuana on service trip
Member of my county's American Cancer Society Youth Board (not official yet)
Moderator and Youth Advisory Board member at youthnoise.com, a site devoted to getting kids involved in politics and community service
1 year job (Jamba Juice...heh)

Oh... and I'm in state... only about 20 minutes from Berkeley.

tell us your major too. Mainly, if you're in an impacted major like engineering.
