Is living 3.4km from the campus ever a problem? Google says it takes something like 9-15 mins to get to campus.
If you live off campus, do you face any problems? and is 3.7km too far away?

....
I think I'm rambling, but I hope you got my Q.

Since no one’s answered your question… I still live in the dorms, and it’s a 10 minute walk for me. For you, it’d be about a half hour walk to campus, if you’re walking at average walk speed (3-4 mph). Google is probably assuming you are driving. Depends on if you’d be comfortable walking that long just to get to class… for me, I wouldn’t want to do it.

Whether it’s a problem, I can’t answer that, since I’ve never experienced it.

Hopefully someone who does live off campus can better answer your question.

It might not seem that far but it’s actually a long walk…I go to a school where it snows 80% of the time, so it’s even worse. It’s also a hassle when you want to go back to your house between classes or when your friends want to go over late at night or something. But it’s not IMPOSSIBLE. It just becomes annoying.

I would do anything I could to avoid having a 30 minute walk to campus. I have a few reasons for believing this:

Many college classes do not have mandatory attendance. I’ve had teachers tell me they literally don’t care if I show up for class as long as I’m there to take the midterm and final. You will have little motivation to walk 30 minutes to a class where the teacher doesn’t care if you’re there or not. I have a hard time going and it takes me an average of 5 minutes to walk to class.

You will be stuck spending down time in between classes on campus which, while you may think will force you to study in the library, usually results in you wasting time wishing you were in bed watching a movie. Getting that half hour of down time in between classes in your own room can make all the difference for that next class.

If you forget something before class, you’re screwed.

It can be dangerous to walk late at night alone for half an hour (depending on your city, but you usually see very different types of neighborhoods within a half hour walk). For me, half an hour can take you from the relatively safe campus to a neighborhood where 14 people got shot just on Halloween (welcome to New Orleans!).

No one will ever want to come over as it’s such a pain to get back to campus.

Overall, you make think it’s great now because you’re saving money by living further away from campus but you’ll hate your decision once school begins.

^Honestly these are all the possible problems a commuter faces, whether they walk or not. If your used to taking a city bus to school or walking to school, I don’t really see what the big deal is. The only difference is that it might be a bit uncomfortable to be on your legs for that long.

GMaps says I’m a 37 minute walk from the building where most of my classes are held. However, there’s very reliable university shuttle service right next to my house, so it really only takes me about 14 minutes of riding + walking. Does your school not have some sort of bus service?

If you’re living that far, you might want to invest in a bicycle or see if any bus goes by your school if your school doesn’t have a bus service of its own. Where I attend college, everyone lives off-campus after their freshman year (since you’re not allowed to live in the dorms after freshman year anyway in order to make room for new students), and nearly everyone owns a bike. Those who live off-campus and don’t own a bike either drive to school and pay for the ridiculously expensive parking permit, or they live in an apartment around the edges of campus (but not on campus property). A 3.4km bike ride would take about 20 minutes, but that also depends on how fast you pedal and whether the wind is in your favor (after all, if it’s a really windy day and you’re going against the wind, that bike ride is going to be hell).

It takes me 10-15 minutes to get to my classes (and like a minute to be technically on campus) so I might not be the best person to answer this question but whatever.

If you had a bus service it might be okay but it wouldn’t be a great idea to walk there, if you ask me, particularly since you’ll probably still need to walk to your classes.

You might have major issues with people coming over or going to see other people who live in the dorms. I know even though I lived really close to campus my ex-friends would never make an effort to come see me and it became entirely up to me to see them. I can only imagine that it is worse if you live far away.
