While some claim that there’s a simple “recipe” for writing a 10-12 essay my opinion is that for students who are consistently scoring an 8 (or lower) on the essay the challenge for improvement is often considerable. There are often three skill areas that need work: analysis, communication and writing.

Your best approach is to start by studying high scoring essays. Look not only into the writing mechanics in such essays but also at the analytic flow – i.e. how the writers went about addressing the thesis. You’ll see that they did so in a focused way; that they provided convincing examples; that they avoided making assertions without proof; that they chose the proofs with care – no extraneous narrative. And of course, you’ll find that the essay flows naturally – it’s well written.

Much is said about “writing mechanics” as the key to excellent essays. But in practice it is the analysis and communication that’s harder, and often lacking in mediocre essays.

Consider finding a mentor who writes well – a teacher, a friend, a parent. Work with them. Some SAT/ACT preparation books may be acceptable surrogates for a mentor.

I read several essays that got a 12 and came up with my own formula. I got an 11.
