I've heard both, but I have no idea which one to use??
Do you use 9x12 of 10x13 ??

i used 9x12. i don't really think it matters...

it doesn't matter... you can get away with using the regular business sized envelopes

i used regular 4x9 ones

I really don't think those big ones are necessary, unless the school wants it not folded... It costs extra to mail those, and how many teachers actually write many pages of for one rec letter? I just gave my teachers self adhesive business letters (just good ones that really aren't that see through)

But if you already have big ones in mind, then go for the biggest so you can't say you could've done things differently

^ lol.

"Rejection??!!! WHY DIDNT I MAIL MY RECS IN BIG LETTER??!!"

Business letters--most likely a secretary opens and files the rec letters in whatever format the adcom prefers -generally all apps are read in identical folders or whatever. It would be too difficult to cope with materials in all shapes and sizes. Most likely the decision makers will never see your original envelope.

Stanford wants them in 9x12. All the other schools on my son's list state no preference, so it was regular business envelopes. We needed to mail the rec papers to one of the recomenders, so I used a 10x13 for that.

If you're getting a rec from a teacher who writes for many students, it would be very thoughtful to get the self-adhesive envelopes. My S got that request from one of his letter writers, and it makes a lot of sense!

what is self=adhesive envelopes? is that a regular size envelope? (the business size)

i think they are the ones that doesnt need to be licked

what about manilla clip envelopes..can we send them in those..is that ok i mean

those are the 9x12s

I gave my teachers the regular ones that force you to fold them...
I highly doubt my schools are going to care that I didnt spend a ridiculous amount of money buying extra envelopes that are an unnecessary size and cost a ton more to mail.
