Envelope Size?

Hey guys--

Stanford specifies that you must send in your supplemental info (teacher/counselor recs, etc) in a 9"x12" envelope... and with their special labels.

Question: Did you guys send all your teacher recs in 9x12 envelopes or did you use regular business envelopes, where you have to fold the papers??

Thanks in advance. :)

bump......

9x12.. cus all my teachers wanted 9x12 envelopes only

I used regular business envelopes. But I'm not applying to Stanford - none of my colleges specified envelope size. If they said 9x12, go with 9x12.

Thanks,

No other college has specified what type of envelope so that's why I'm wondering... I guess it makes sense, that they wouldn't want the forms all folded.

Anybody else have any idea??

I sent the rest of my teacher recommendations with business size envelopes. Only Stanford asked for the big sizes, so only Stanford got them.

yea the only school i used big envolopes for was stanford, the rest were standard size ones

Stanford wants 9X12 because they scan it in so their admissions officers can read it from a computer. A folded rec won't scan as well.

I think Columbia might request this too?

adding onto this question... where DO you find the specifications? I've looked over the stanford site and the sites of the colleges i'm applying to, and i just couldn't find it :(
help, please!

Use regular envelopes for all colleges but Stanford.

Yea columbia also requires no folding. The directions are usually found as small print on the recommendation forms. Tricky :D

How many stamps do you need for those 9x12's?

From what we have been told, all schools prefer that you do not fold so that all paperwork can be scanned into the computer....The 9X12 envelopes with approx. 2 sheets of paper are approx. $.91, but I would suggest asking the post office to weigh in advance.....

I just used 9x12 for all of mine.

Hmm I have a roll of those first class mail stamps. How many would I need to put on?

Please be very careful to apply the correct postage to the envelopes with your recommendations. The postage rates changed significantly during the spring of 2007. For a large envelope, such as 9 x 12 inches, the rate for one ounce is $0.80 and each additional ounce is $0.17. Due to the weight of the envelope, two to three pages will require $0.97.

For letter size envelopes, 4 1/8 x 9 1/2 inches, the rate is $0.41 for the first ounce and $0.17 for each additional ounce. There is an additional fee if the thickness of the envelope exceeds 1/4 inch.

Please check the USPS site for rate information: http://www.usps.com

I have first class mail stamps too. I'm wondering the same question. How many stamps would I need to put on for 9X12" manila envelope?

Just got back from parent-student GC conference. Told to use 9x12 and put 2 stamps on it. Also told to put college address on it, but not return address because HS puts their own on since it comes from them. HS adds last year's student profile, plus transcripts, and recommendation letters to envelope.

Where on Columbia's rec forms does it say this? I've read through the teacher rec form several times; it mentions nothing about envelope size. I'm really tempted to send them in regular sized envelopes, but I don't want to make any mistakes.

$.97 = 3 stamps...?

Just about everyone at our school is sending all their letters in big envelopes.
