What are some prestigious summer programs for rising sophomores? Just planning ahead. :D Anything science-related, math-related, (TASP, TASS, things of the sort), etc., ?

Also, I would like to know: would internships be rare for someone my age? What if I have Programming experience, and I'm really cool (?) :D

How should one make use of their first year of high school to make it most fulfilling and excellent? Everyone is welcome to post their ideas. Help out your lowerclassmen! :)

i can't help with the summer programs except for saying to look on google and then check out the age range. to internships, i have never heard of an internship being given to a 14 year old. i could be wrong in that so you may just have to do some looking around. i wouldn't worry about making your freshmen year fulfulling. i mean don't get too serious yet. try out some new clubs and see what you like. if you aren't sure if you want to join a club, then go to the first meeting to see what they do and what it is about. the first meeting doesn't mean you are committed to the club. Interact is a good club. i can't think of anything else. oh enjoy freshmen year as it is the easiest. good luck and have fun!!

I'm in physics research and working part-time as programmer, and I'm going to 10th grade. What language are you using as programmer and when are you going to be 15? Here's two facts you can grasp:
A. You need to be 15 to work.
B. Good C++ (probably C#/Java also) programmers are popular in US and it's not so easy to find one.
For research, there are no barriers, clearly as long as you have some knowledge of what's going on in your field (you read arXiv.org daily, for example). What's a problem in letting first-grader into lab if he knows what to do, right?

i think freshman year you should try out a bunch of stuff and find out what clubs/activities you're really interested in and then spend a lot of time on those things.
internships are pretty rare after sophomore year, but you can try anyway. i would suggest just finding an activity that you like and working at it over the summer. if you can get a job, even better. if all else fails, you can just take summer school.
have some fun freshman year cuz the classes just get harder after that.

Actually I've been given the wonderful opportunity that I will be able to create all my own clubs and be the founder\president of each. My school will be brand new, so there are very few to none clubs already formed. I have many ideas for each club; if you'd like to know about them and comment,PM me, I'd be very grateful. All criticism welcome :)

Mr_chipset - Thankfully, I program in C\C++. I'm still learning; but it's my favorite language so far. I prefer it to command-line languages like Python. Apparently, Python can be more effective; yes, perhaps. What is your take?

That's true, in my state you only have to be 14. All the good jobs though, you have to be 16+. i work at the fricken grocery store. :[

Umm i really think summer time is better spent with volunteer work, jobs, developing ECs. Paying thousands of dollars for a summer program only shows the admissions committee that your parents have money, not much else. No one believes us when we tell them...it's true! The exceptions are RSI, TASP and those are for rising seniors.

ChaosTheory, Python is more web-oriented so they would probably require you to know subtles of web-programming. But generally it depends on whether you can find job and you like language, try craiglists for your area.

A) Not looking hard enough for internships. Next week I will start shadowing a lawyer and right now I am at a non-profit and just finished writing a letter of reference. But I think they only hired me because I can speak Spanish and Chinese.

Umm they dont need internships. and CTY is good but it wont help for college. i did it and i think the friendships i made were more valuable than the course itself.

Depends on what class you take. Game Theory=complete B.S.
Philosophy of Mind=very helpful (I'm in debate and it's philosophy heavy). Also helped me have unique perspective on life.

CTY, I will repeat for at least the 3rd time, demonstrate to colleges that you can only learn at an accelerated pace.

Also, I'm pretty sure I saw at least the words internship TWICE here. I was also referring to how people kept complaining they can't get jobs.
