The supplement application asks for you to list:
1. the books you read for pleasure in the past year
2. the required readings you enjoyed most in the past year
3. the print and/or electronic publications you read regularly
4. the films, performances, exhibits, concerts, shows, etc. you enjoyed most in the past year

I was just wondering what you guys put for these and will how you answer these questions be taken seriously? I ask this, because I'm not much of a reader and I haven't read too many books the few years, let alone just last year. I feel like it won't be to my advantage to leave these blank.

**also for the print publication and shows, will it be looked down upon if I wrote Sports Illustrated and movies such as Inception/Toy Story 3 and stuff (because I actually read/seen those).

The point of the application is to sell yourself to the admission committee, granted everything you submit should be true. If they show who you are and you believe it’s a viable selling point, then go for it. If it doesn’t set you apart from the pack, then there’s really no reason to include them. Though don’t leave anything blank, either…

@thinkforyourself: yeah I know Columbia is a reach for me but I still want to give it a try. I’m not much of a reader, but that doesn’t mean I’m not motivated to work hard.

i didn’t mean that it was necessarily a reach for you–just whether or not you’d enjoy being at a school that so values and emphasizes reading as a core aspect of the academic experience.

as i mentioned before, i really haven’t done much “outside” reading the past few years. i also don’t want to leave those spaces blank.

while i will put some stuff down that i’ve actually read/seen, i also want to add a few more to fill up some space. can anyone give me suggestions?

Be honest. What if your interviewer starts asking questions about one of the books you listed? What an embarassment! Surely you have read something in the past year?

I’m putting a well known book that deals with science, a novel that I read once for school but am re-reading (its not well known), a cookbook (why not? I love to cook), and thats all I’ve got so far

Ok, first, your interviewer doesn’t have access to your application and will not ask you questions about the books you read. However, reading is valued by admissions officers and interviewers alike, so the interviewer might ask you what you have been reading.

Honestly, if you’re this worried about it, just read more books now. Right now counts as part of the last year or so, especially because the app isn’t due for another few months. Just read some interesting books. I had a range of books: some fantasy (which i like) some classics, and some random books about things that interested me.

I went back and forth on that last year. Ultimately, I think I ended up not putting authors in order to list more books. But you should feel free to list authors if most of the books you’re listing are particularly obscure or if you don’t have a lot of books you want to write down.
