For those of us whose W GPA takes a hit because of Latin

I could be Val (theoretically speaking, or even just higher ranked) if Latin was leveled. But it's not. It carries the same weight as a cooking class. It's not fair. I guess it doesn't matter that I have an A+ in that class. Well I have to if I want to get the highest possible points for it. (an A+ is worth 3.3 in an unleveled course when factoring GPAs, versus an honors class worth 4.0. Yeah, we all know about extreme values.)

Rant here.

Lingua mortua sola lingua bona est.

Or, if you prefer a more realistic script,

LINGUAMORTUASOLALINGUABONAEST

More realistic is changing Us to Vs :)

I hate when my teacher makes us read in that format. But the book makes it too easy with commas and stuff

At my school, Latin is an honors course and I don’t see why it shouldn’t be.

Are French/Spanish weighted or unweighted at your school?

And you can’t get a 4.0 for a normal class? Why not? That’s dumb. I would complain. A lot.

But yeah… At my school, normal classes can get a 4.0, honors can get a 4.5, and AP can get a 5.0. I thought that was pretty common.

I think Latin beyond 1+2 is honors at my school.

My school district’s weighting: College Prep (on-level) 5, Honors 6, AP/IB/DE 7

Unweighted, of course, has all on a 4.0 scale.

^Talk about trying for grade inflation. An on level class is weighted an extra point? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of the weighting system?

Actually, no weight system is grade inflation; it’s merely using a weight system. Grade inflation would be like 87%=A or just making getting an A easier.

My school doesn’t have “on-level,” so I drew that line at “college prep.” There’s also below that (but above remedial, but still not normal), so I suppose they didn’t want to make those students feel bad.

My school’s weighting system is incredibly stupid too, so don’t worry. For us, the valedictorian is the person with the highest UW Average, and Honors classes are weighted to 4.4, and APs are weighted to 4.5.

Basically, you’re better off taking honors classes if you’re only focused on GPA.

AUGirl- French and Spanish at my school have honors, level 1, and level 2(the lowest.)

So Latin isn’t a “normal” course. I think honors/level 1 would be normal courses.

Latin 4 is honors, but I’m not taking it next year. I think it’s not honors because:

 1. there aren’t enough kids to split into different levels
 2. any student, regardless of academic capability/what kind of courses they take, can take the class. It’s like middle/elementary school. Everyone is lumped into one class.

Here’s how grading goes for calculating WEIGHTED GPA. UW is up to 4.3 and doesn’t include difficulty (but we know that):

A+ in unleveled class = 3.3
A+ in level 2 class = 3.5 or 3.7
A+ in level 1 class = 4.0
A+ in honors class = 4.3
A+ in AP class = 4.5

That’s roughly it. So averaging my As in all AP/Honors with that 3.3… Yeah…

Bazzle- my school refers to W GPA as QPR(quality point ratio). The Val is the one with the highest QPR(aka W GPA) but only UW is on our transcript.

Isn’t college prep a fancy word for on level?

Then don’t take Latin. Or if Latin matters to you, stop caring about your GPA.

There’s no Honors Latin at my school, either… just CP Latins I-III and then AP Latin. If I had taken Spanish instead of Latin AND gotten a 93 instead of a 92 in Honors Ancient History, I would be valedictorian. But 3/436 isn’t bad, I guess. =P

Ironically, 4 out of the people ranked in the top 6 in my senior class took Latin, including our valedictorian, so I guess it didn’t end up affecting me TOO much. Plus, pretty much everyone who has been in Honors Spanish I-IV the past few years have complained about the amount of work involved, while us Latin kids have had it super-easy the past few years in terms of foreign language. =)

My main regret about taking Latin is that you can’t really speak it. I always envied kids who have taken another language the same amount of time I’ve taken latin who can actually speak the language seemingly fluently. Even my brother, who’s been in French I for 2 months, can offer a French phrase here or there. The only thing that sucks now is I’ll probably have to start all over with Spanish or something like that in college to fulfill the foreign language requirement.

Amazing- haha yeah, i’m 6 so I can’t complain. It’s interesting to learn though, even if I can’t speak it.

PioneerJones- please stop commenting on my threads. Thanks.

But I thought you liked me :(

Seems fair enough.

I probably did at one point. But your comments are unnecessary most of the time

I’m in an IB HL Latin class.
ahve taken Latin for 5 years all 4 o which were honors, this year is HL IB I have had a B or A each quarter and I still can not speak latin. Well I can do well enough but it comes out horrible.

like I can write kid books in latin but not any serious latin prose
i.e.
Iulia est puella. Marcus puer est. Iulia et Marcum librum sunt. Librum pater est Octavion. etc etc blah blah blah…

but if you ask me to write you a poem or something good I just go
O___________________O

i swear the only reason I do well is because i’m a crazy latin club fan.

anybody here going to the Harvard curtarmen match? (I can’t even spell the name of the game right -_____-)

But yah. The reason I love latin is because I can wear a toga to a latin event.

Plus I like mythology and stuff.
But Latin helps my grade. All those upper level A’s and B’s for 5 years makes me look good. lolz :D

Pioneer- I like you

Black- same haha. I can tell you about Salvius and Caecilius and Quintus(from Cambridge Latin books) but don’t ask me about the weather.
