How much do you/did you charge per hour? What if there's some sort of tutoring involved? How much more would you charge?

I've been asked to babysit and Italian girl whose family recently moved here. They also want me to help her out with her English..How much should I charge?

I'm new at this babysitting & tutoring for money thing! I've only done it for free before! lol

When I used to babysit I didn't tell them how much money I wanted, but the family was pretty well off so I got paid $10 per hour, which was awesome. The kids just watched TV and played with a toy car. It was an easy 50 bucks.

I tutor a fifth grader in math now. I got paid $6 per hour, which I feel is pretty reasonable. However, she could probably go see a teacher during lunch or something for free. lol

If I were in your position I would just tell them they could pay me whatever they could afford. Maybe if she starts improving in her English, you'll get a raise.

I occasionally babysit for my neighbors. I've been charging $5 per hour from the beginning. I don't make much money at all, but since they're my neighbors and really nice people, I feel bad raising the rate.

I charge $10 for babysitting and $15 for tutoring. I think that's considered "fair" in my area, but keep in mind that these kids are my parents' colleagues children and/or students at my private school, all of whom are pretty well off, so you should probably consider the family's financial situation before deciding what to charge.

This family's pretty well off. I mean, they live in one of the city's most exclusive areas in an ultra luxurious (beachfront) condo. I guess they'll be able to afford around $20/h lol.. or should I charge more or less?

I filled in on my younger sisters job once and made $6 an hour (they later cut her back to $5 though).
once I thought I'd try to find one, but the person I talked to was going to pay $4 for three kids.
that was the end of my babysitting career!

Even if the family is pretty well off, I think $20/hr is a bit steep. Ask for $10/hr and if they are pleased with how well you did they might tip you a bit extra.

I've never been asked to tutor, but I have helped with the kid's homework before. I usually charged between $5-7/hr depending on the family & how the kids were.

$20 is really a lot..it's not like you're a professional.

I never really present rates..I just tell them that whatever they give me is fine, and usually I make around $6-10/hour for babysitting (I don't tutor). If they would give me less than that, I'd just say I was busy the next time if it wasn't worth it.

Ahem, excuse me, but I think what the family may have described is more like reinforcing her English speech, correcting her grammar, or looking over her homework in ways they cannot if they aren't native speakers.
They've identified a meaningful extra responsibility for you while you babysit, same as if the child was healthy but in a wheelchair, and they asked you to watch out especially to organize her wheelchair access. That's not same as being a special education teacher!!
An English tutor prepares lessons, gives tests, evaluates progress, and is a profession.
I think $10./hour sounds right, maybe $12 if they're very well off. It is just one child, which isn't quite as hard as three.
If you ask for too much pay sometimes you set yourself up for pressure and they get fussy about your performance.
It's great that you have this opportunity. Learn from it, earn from it, but don't think that "helping with English" is being a tutor.

I started yesterday & worked 7 hrs. They asked me how much I wanted and I told them to pay me whatever they could afford. I didn't get paid, though. I get paid tomorrow when I go back. I didn't know they had a younger son, and I ended up working with him a bit, too. I doubt I'll accept more than $75. The family's really nice, and even invited me to spend the night at their apt. They also talked to my mom about me going to Bologna with them during summer vacation.

Since I worked the 7 hrs, $20 is quite a lot. I thought it was only going to be 2-3 hours. My dad's not happy with that, but who cares? lol
