For those who did Princeton's "Cracking the SAT" practice tests

I want to ask if you had difficulty understanding question 15 from 3rd test, 6th section. I am trying to identify the reason of every of my mistakes but I can't even understand where this question is coming from. Curious, if it is just an individual problem.

The author mentions the loss of many of the Indians' artistic and architectural creations as a parallel to

The correct answer perplexes me because then the question and the answer together sound like this: the author mentioned the loss of artistic and architectural creations to draw a parallel to the reason the Indians wagered heavily on chunky.

I can’t understand the connection between the two.

SAT would always ask to name author’s intention of mentioning something. In my opinion, in this passage the author didn’t have any intention to make the two parallel but the question implies so.
