Silverturtle/ Master CR People.

First of all, I just took the Jan SAT. I am somewhat satisfied with my performance, but I do have one question regarding the critical reading section.

The question related to "reasons" and which reason would be best added to the list.

I interpreted this question as the reasons of the father, or the sentimental reasons. Because i think that the context that the "reasons" is taken from is something like "less sentimental reasons"; Therefore, should not the reasons be relating to the sentimental ones.

I understand that reasons were also "correctly" interpreted to be non sentimental ones. However, I still think that this question is ambiguous because if one interpreted the context in another manner, he or she would get it wrong as I did so.

If anyone can clearly explain why this question is actually not ambiguous, I would appreciate it.

-Thanks

What do you contend that the answer should be?

Oh , sorry forgot, I contend that it should be either inexpensive motels or scenic views based on the interpretation. I of course put the latter as i interpreted it wrong according to other answers on the forum.

The question was directed specifically at the “reasons” (Line ___). The “reasons” in this particular line were all economical ones, in contrast to the sentimental reason provided by Virgil’s father.

“scenic view” would not work because the father had already cited wanting to see where he was going as a reason; the narrator was providing additional reasons.

“inexpensive motels” fits with the reasons’ theme of saving money.

I picked “inexpensive motels”.

Ok thanks for the explanations.

I put scenic views. But I fail CR.

This may be so, but as I argued already in a post on the main CR thread, the father could NOT have possibly chosen “inexpensive motels” as a reason for taking the back routes, since he even explicitly stated that he did not want to make any stops. That WAS the whole point of going around and trying to find someone to pick up, anyway… at the beginning, he was trying to AVOID having to make an overnight stop. Motels were not even on the father’s mind, let alone the fact that he would even have considered them a reason for choosing the back route.

Also, the question belongs to the type of question that goes, “In the context of the passage, which of these fits best?” In the context of the passage, at the beginning motels were nonexistent in the father’s mind (in fact, it seemed like he was trying to avoid them altogether). The answers do NOT necessarily have to be ALL directly related to money, especially if they don’t make sense in the context of the passage.

Fledging, if the answer indeed turns out to be inexpensive motels, what will you do? Suicide? lol. That’s what CR makes me think of. Answers are so subjective… why cant they make it objective? LOL like “What city are virgil and his father traveling to?”

No, I’m pretty sure my life’s worth a lot more than a CR question. And I was only aiming for a 2250 anyways, so it’s not like my life will be over if I’m wrong (at this point, I’m pretty certain that I’m not, unless anyone can disprove my argument). The reason the tone of my post was so strong was that I just thought of the question and the passage again, and suddenly realized exactly why I had chosen “faster travel”.

And if you want more objective reading questions, try the ACT. :D

Bumping this thread up… I’d like to see if anyone can disprove my argument first, because if no one can’t, then the consolidated list on the CR thread needs to be changed. ;)

I chose “less pollution” for that question ROFL I FAIL

Bumping again… ha, I feel like a rebel for challenging the CR consolidated list, which some users here take to be almost like their personal Bibles… :P

I also thought “inexpensive motels” couldn’t be the answer because the father didn’t want to stop etc.

Oh, and just for the record, I think I posted at a time when the thread was moving really fast, so I guess people overlooked it. (no one responded) I’m just bringing out the argument again here so that all those who wish to respond to it can do so.
