I wonder how much they actually read.

Hehe, Gorbachev...as long as it worked for masamune! I want to be a freaky super-genius now, too :).
Filmxoxo, I've the same question. Do they read, or just throw the extra stuff out the window (well maybe not exactly that :p)? Won't it be unfair to other applicants if they read?

They read some stuff, but if you've read the Gate Keepers, they toss aside the thick stuff. You just have to find the perfect medium.

So, would 2 extra essays, 1 peer rec., a detailed resume, and a small letter be too much?

Two extra essays seem unnecesary. I doubt they'd read the second extra one. There's a difference between doing what they ask for, just more, and doing extra stuff that they don't even request. You should be fine with just one other essay. Or somehow combine the two into one! The rest of the extra stuff of yours seems fine. Of course, I am no admissions officer, and am just guessing due to what my college counselors have said and what I've observed.

Thanks film! I think I can find a way of combining the second essay with the letter.

I did the supplemental essay and attached two articles I wrote for my paper (one column, one news piece), an article from my local newspaper about how I donated $3000 to Make-A-Wish from my Jeopardy! winnings, a 6-page resume/music resume/repertoire list, and a CD of some vocal selections. I got in. I just hope I didn't overwhelm them, though. They probably were facepalming when they went through my app! XD

My friend who was deferred then submitted a hell of a lot of stuff...from compositions to extra essays to extra rec letters...and he got in. So don't lose hope!

wow nice, calculus_girl!

another thing...

in addition to the stuff I listed before, I also brought some additional supplemental materials to my alumni interview. (a newsletter from one of my extracurics and a write up on a project im working on) he was really impressed that i was so prepared... doing this is another option in case you think you might be sending too much stuff to the admissions officers themselves. [however, it might make more of an effect on your admissions if the committee sees it rather than just the alum discussing it in their evaluation... but then again, who knows?!]

So did anyone who got in not submit any supplemental material?

I didn't send anything extra except a printed copy of a website homepage that I designed for a nonprofit.
