Do these schools attempt to translate your schools grading system to theirs, or do you start off with a clean slate? Is class rank a thing at boarding schools, or is it school-by-school?
In our experience so far (daughter was junior year transfer), it seems like they translate the old school’s grading system to the new schools. So her cumulative GPA is based on all four years, not just two.
@SevenDad just curious-we were toying with trying to transfer at one point and it was --or seemed to be at the time–a nightmare to navigate. Just wondered if your daughter moved from private to private or public to private and how different the schools were --i.e no awkward issues :).
Private to private (I guess you didn’t see the “announcement” when I made it official earlier this year.
From an strictly admin POV, there have been zero issues with the transfer so far. She wasn’t too far along the college process at her old school (though they do start with Sophomores there) so that was not an two steps forward/one back thing.
I will say that from a student experience POV, the transition to a new school in your Junior year is not without its challenges. From a student POV, there are established social groups that can be tough to crack. Additionally, there are definitely “ways of doing things/getting things done” that vary from school to school. Simple things like scheduling office hours with teachers, taking day/weekend leaves…all take some getting used to.
One recent thing that came up that illustrates how relatively smooth the transient has been was that I had the following on my “to-do” list for her college process: “request official transcript from old school to upload to NCAA clearing house” and the College Counselor at the new school was like “We already have it…no need to request that from her old school”.
FWIW, while the school may calculate the GPA in order to put something into Naviance, they may not provide a calculated GPA to colleges. They let the colleges calculate, using whatever weighting they want for rigor, exclusion of arts classes, etc. based on transcripts.
This is consistent with no ranking.
@SevenDad Thanks. I must have missed the announcement! Will search for it–
This is dependent upon the school. My HS did/does not calculate a cum GPA, so any grades from the old school are entered as they appear on the old school’s transcript.
