Fordham Admissions - Enough

Guys--

This class of seniors has been put through the ringer enough. From early action, to regular decisions, to waitlists, frankly the treatment has been atrocious, from Fordham and many other schools. You indicated that they would hear in early May regarding the waitlist. It's now mid-May. Get your act together. These kids deserve better.

The demographics have hit all time highs. Even Lehigh had record applications and record rejections. LEHIGH! The place that was a sure safety a few years ago is now a highly selective school.

The common application made things a lot worse.

Fordham had in excess of 22,000 applications this year. Last year they had slightly more than 14,000. Next year they think they will also greatly exceed this year's record number.

Is it fair? No. The kids who got rejected at Harvard Princeton and Yale are applying to the so called second tier schools in record numbers. Kids who would have been slam dunks at HYP 10 years ago are now routinely rejected. Its a bad situation.

However, its not a personal slight. Its not aimed at you or your kid.

Yes, they have been through a lot. High School is now VERY stressful and competitive. 30 years ago it was so different and so much easier.

I am sorry you are waiting on the wait list. You are not alone.

Applying to college today is a science...you have to pick wisely, a couple of reach schools, a couple of match schools and a couple of safety schools....and FOCUS on the safety schools...embrace them. Every thing else is cream on the top.

Your kid will be fine, even if disappointed at Fordham or elsewhere. My D was waitlisted at a school she really wanted. We arent waiting on Moses to come down from Mt. Sinai.

We are in at Fordham and delighted. Its a great match for us. (not to rub it in with yours.) The point being, there is a school out there for your kid. And if you still want Fordham in a year, then transfer in and reapply.

I wish you well. But a good and great education can be had at many schools around the country.

In the coming days, we will be sending a letter to wait listed students letting them know that we're closing the waiting list. We will offer a small number the opportunity to remain active for a few more weeks on the off chance that a space or two opens up.

We have offered a small number of spaces to students who could commute to campus. Spaces for residents were filled.

Typically, it has been our goal each year to offer admission to a group of students that we think will mostly fill our class. Each year, we hope to round out the class with some waiting list activity. There are many students on the waiting list we would really like to admit.

So, while we're very pleased with the students who've opted to join the class of 2011, it is dissapointing that we could not accomidate many of the students referenced above.

We are very aware that this is a stressful time for students and their families. We've moved as quickly as possible to bring the wait list process to resolution.

Fordham Admiss- Thanks for the update. Could you give us some stats. How many were on the waitlist and how many on the list did you offer? I know you had a record number of applicants apply.

Thanks

"The demographics have hit all time highs. Even Lehigh had record applications and record rejections. LEHIGH! The place that was a sure safety a few years ago is now a highly selective school."

I think you're a little confused. Lehigh may have been more of a safety school for people who applied to elite colleges, but that's not at all relevant
in a Fordham discussion.

Well perhaps, MountainHawk it isnt relavant for your discussion. I was only trying to give an example of another school that had record applications, record rejections, and a long wait list....that did not used to be in that situation.

Yes, "safety" is relative to one's stats and where one applies. I did not mean to offend or appear elitist. I am assuredly NOT elitist.

Fordham is a superb school. I am delighted it is getting so many applications, as an expression of its quality, ethics and ethos. It is sad that so many have to be turned away. But neither do we want to turn it into a giant school and lose its special qualities.

We are glad to be at Fordham. Not elitist, not arrogant, not pompous, not anything other than delighted.

Have a good one.
