Fordham BA-Theater Performance/Acting

Hello all! This feels a little late to be asking this, but does anyone know the acceptance rate to Fordham's BA Theatre Performance/Acting program? I've already applied to 17 audition based schools (including 1 backup). Most of these are pretty competitive programs, and since I'm interested in both MT and Acting, I've been able to apply for both options at many of my schools. They are BOCO, CCM(does anyone know if you can audition for both Drama and MT?), CMU, Depaul, Emerson, guthrie, hartt, ithaca, juilliard, umich, ncarts, nyu, pace, psu, roosevelt, boston u, and suny purchase. I just wanna give myself every opportunity possible, but I thought it might be good to add a few good BA audition programs as well. So I'm thinking about acting for UCLA, although their app was due on Nov. 30th, and fordham. The only schools where I can't schedule an acting audition are boco (of course), emerson, psu, and roosevelt. i'm also thinking of switching my emerson mt audition to an acting one. still can't decide between mt and acting!!!! i know this is a crazy long rant, and most of you are probably going thru the exact same process. i've just worked so hard trying to find the right schools and preparing all my material-i just want to make the right decisions school-wise, and hopefully end up with the best options i can possibly achieve. positive thinking!!! many thanks to anyone who can tell me about fordham's acting program and how concentrated it is performance-wise. thank you thank you thank you!!!

I can’t tell you about Fordham but UCLA is no longer open. The UCs are very competitive this year with fewer slots but more applicants. The only program still accepting applications is the School of Nursing.

Hi Sarah – I believe that Fordam’s program is competitive. If you are looking for a true “safety” school you will want to add a program that is an academic safety where an audition is not required for admission.

Audition based acceptances are always “fluky.” No auditioned based program can be considered a true back-up.

There is a lot of information on here about non-auditioned programs. You may want to look at the MT forum as well.

Thanks for responding! Right now, my two back up-non audition schools are drew u. and the BA theatre option at pace. i know muhlenberg, is now audition based for many of its performance programs, but is there still a BA option that isn’t audition based? ha, i also scheduled a MMU audition for either their bfa acting/ or ba theatre-mt minor. i’m guessing this school is a little less competitive than most of the ones i listed above? still fairly competitive though, right?

I do not believe an audition is required for Muhlenberg. They have scholarship auditions, but not for admissions. From their website:

“An audition/interview or theatre design portfolio submission is not required for admission to study in the department. Students do have the option to audition or submit a portfolio in support of their application if desired. An audition or interview is required for applicants who wish to be considered for talent-based scholarship awards.”

[Muhlenberg College Theatre & Dance](http://www.muhlenberg.edu/depts/theatre/2admission.html)

In terms of competitiveness of Marymount Manhattan – The admit rate for Marymount may be a high percentage than a school like CMU (for example), but any school that requires an audition is competitive.

For example – I teach at a BA school where no audition is required for the Theatre Concentration, but where an audition is required for the Musical Theatre Concentration. The admit rate for the musical theare concentration is about 18% - 20%. MUCH higher than schools with a 2% admit rate, but there are still 80% of the applicants for Musical Theatre who are not admitted to the concentration. Because we are a school that separates academic and major admissions… many of the students who do not get into the MT concentration but DO get into JMU choose to come to JMU in the Theatre Concentration, take advantage of both MT and Theatre training and opportunities and are very happy.

It looks like you have non-auditioned back-ups (although it looks like the BA program at Pace also requires an audition, so it cannot be considered a back-up – [Pace University - Performing Arts - Auditions](http://www.pace.edu/page.cfm?doc_id=9258))

The audition process is subjective, each year there are students who do not get into a school that is perceived as less competitive and DO get into a school that is perceived as more competitive. You have applied to A LOT of schools. Applications take a lot of time and money. As long as you have one academic, non-auditioned safety school on your list (that you would be HAPPY to attend). You may want to take a step back and now focus on preparing for the auditions. Good luck :)
