Hi,
so I got accepted to Lincoln Center. But unfortunately I did not apply for any financial aid.
The problem is, I didn’t file my FAFSA because my father refused to provide information.
I am a US citizen but I live in Europe. Thus our income is very low and my family would definitely qualify for FA. Now it’s too late to file and anyways I still couldn’t because my father won’t do it. I do not live with my father, and I have lived with my grandmother for most of my life. She supports me financially, I don’t even know if my father has a job, he does not give me any money. Though legally he is still supporting me financially.
I would really like to go to Fordham, but it is very expensive… Is there any way to still get some aid, scholarships? It is all very confusing to me, as I don’t know much about the American education system.
This is a tough one. I suggest you email admissions and explain your plight. The problem is that you didn’t file a FAFSA and that is the one thing that helps get loans. It might come to (A) you won’t be able to go attend at all; (B) defer for a year to get paperwork in order and during that year attend your local university. Fordham is a CSS school so that is additional financial aid paperwork to fill out also. You didn’t do that either??? If you don’t know what that is, it’s another financial aid form that delves a bit deeper into finances. This also helps the school determine financial aid.
You have to do the FAFSA/CSS. You stated that even though he does not give you money “legally he is still supporting me financially”.
There are sections on the FAFSA for explanations. You will have to explain and be prepared to supply documentation to support claims if and when the school asks for them. I know of someone whose father isn’t supportive at all and he had to do all the paperwork. But this is here in the US, but you will have to do the same thing. You will have to fill out all the paperwork for next year and possibly reapply for admission.
I know my daughter has friends who are international at Fordham and they do not receive any aid. I know from experience my daughter wanted to attend university overseas, and we would have to pay full freight, less loans. But since you are a US Citizen, that might help with something.
Is it possible to talk with a counselor at your current school if they have experience with their students attending university in the US?
But I’m afraid that you might not be able to attend this year. But email admissions and also FA with the same questions.Did you apply to other schools here in the US?
Good luck.
I do know about the CSS profile, but I did not file it either… The reason I missed all the dealines for FA was because my father won’t provide any information or file tax returns or help in any way. He is also a US citizen living in Europe.
I e-mailed Fordham to find out if there is still some way… Will try to explain my special circumstances.
At my local school we don’t have any counselors or anyone who could help with admissions. Specially if it is about the US.
I applied to other schools to which I got accepted, but I am facing the same financial problems.
I am hoping I will be able to attend a cheaper college in the US for a year and then re-apply to the school I want to go.
Thank you so much for your help!
