I am part of the incoming 2021 class at Rose Hill. I am deciding between taking French or German. I took French for three years in high school but am curious to take German. My question is that if starting a new language is hard to balance with the other classes I will be taking or if I should go with the safer option of at least having a basis in the language I somewhat know.
Stay with what you know. You will be stressed. It’s not like how it was in HS.
Absolutely right! It is a big transition. The workload, socializing, gym, laundry, finance, shopping… It can be challenging in the first year. Stay within the comfort zone until you figure it out. That way stuff will get better fast.
I actually think that if you want to learn German, you should. You’re only in college once, when will you have another chance to pick up a new language and dedicate a lot of time to it? If you don’t like it, you can just switch back to French second semester.
@Ermar101 it is very good advise from @curiositysquared I think you should take German–awesome language. If you are looking forward for it, that means, you are well prepared for the challenge. Good luck.
My twins have signed up for into to Mandarin…so you won’t be the only one working hard if you decide to take German!
@Erm422. Instead of continuing french or Spanish, which I took in high school, I studied German when I went to college. I don’t think it’s necessarily all that difficult to start a new language, because you are back to the basics! As a matter of fact, it might be more difficult to continue on with one at an upper level since you get into more complex grammar and listening comprehension. If you are interested in learning something new, I would definitely go for it! Good luck.
