I am Jewish and Chinese. I wrote my college essay on my cultural and religious background and how it's shaped me. I can't lie, it was killer. It's definately a great essay. The thing is .. my GPA is horrible! In attempt to not sound arrogant, i'm very smart, i am just so easily bored by school. I'm constantly reading and learning and discussing, but school is a bore. I think my cumulitive is a 2.7, but the last trimester of senior year i recieved a 3. 6(?) and the first triemster of my senior year i earned a 3.4, with 2 AP classes and an Honors. My SAT is r600 m580 w590. I didn't submit my ACT because it was unimpressive. I've taken many art classes, submitted my art profile of creative and innovative art, and got a great recommendation from an art teacher. My interest is art history. If not, then definately something in the design field, whether it's being a Creative Director or owning a gallery.

i meant the last trimester of my JUNIOR year a got a 3.6. first tri of senior year a 3.4 and second trimester of my senior year (which i will submit as an update to my transcript) i’m guessing i’ll get a 3.2-3.6. And i’ve actually taken 3 AP’s! and pretty much all core classes throughout highschool… hardly any easy things like sociology or computer or any of those. I always got rec’s from an english teacher and my counselor…

Also… CORRECTION: my essay wasn’t about how it has shaped me… it’s more of just a description of my youth and my lifestyle. I can email it to you or however you guys work it on here…

pleasseee help… would it be annoying to write them a letter, describing my great desire to attend Fordham. I feel like i will be depressed if i don’t get accepted… honestly…

I am afraid that neither your gpa nor your sat are encouraging. Fordham should not be your number one school. It should be your reach school. Where else did you apply?

You would probably have an uphill battle but your story is interesting. Dont write yourself off but dont put all your eggs in one basket, either.

This is probably a good time for you to reflect on your attitude toward school BEFORE you or your parents pay thousands of dollars for a college education.

Your GPA and SAT indicate that either you are not as smart as you think you are or you just didn’t do the work. What makes you think that you can or will do the work if you get into Fordham? What if you don’t like some of the many required core courses and find them to be a bore?

I’m sure you have many great qualities but you will also need a certain level of maturity to handle college level work. There will be many things in your life that you will consider boring but they simply must get done. I personally consider washing dishes to be a bore but if I don’t do it, I will end up with a sink full of dirty dishes and nothing to cook in. And maybe I’ll end up ordering out for a while but hopefully I’ll learn before I run out of money that there just isn’t any way around it…I need to wash the pots if I want to use them to cook and the bottom line is, boring or not, I HAVE to do it.

Nadleri, perhaps I lacked a certain level of maturity last night when I came home frustrated from teaching an 8th grade Religion class (I volunteer) and decided to post my comments.

I hope that you get into Fordham if it’s really where you want to be. If you don’t and you still think it’s the right school, you have the opportunity to transfer. Study hard wherever you end up and your dreams can become a reality. Good luck! :)

Fordham is definately my reach school, but it’s also my dream school. My dad is a professor and head of a business school, so i have the opportunity to receive full tuition to pretty much any school i want… so i didn’t really skimp on the application process… I applied to Skidmore as my second reach, washington and jefferson as a … not really a match but not exactly a complete reach, University of Cincinnati, Pace, Seton Hill, and i’ll probably apply to Kent State University-they have a well known art program. If it helps, i submitted my Art Profile and i have also played violin for 14 years… and work around 20 hours a week. I have a few more pieces to upload but here it is: [Flickr: nadleri’s Photostream](nadleri | Flickr)

I strongly recommend you apply to Xavier University in Cincinnati as well. U Cincinnati has a decent conservatory of music, I am told.

Nothing wrong with your list and nothing wrong with dreaming. Just keep your feet on the ground, be prepared for reality and if you get lucky and get in to a reach school (or any other school) make sure that you work your rear end off in college.

Oh, no apology needed! i posted on here not to receive hopeful and encouraging comments, but harsh and realistic comments. I do want to say that my parents wont be paying for my tuition though… I received a tuition exchange grant, and the remaining tuition for room and board, books, and city living is all up to me. I will have to work through college… so please, i’m not some wealthy kid who has had everything handed to me. But, (and i do want your honest opinion) please check out my art profile online. I’ve also taken 14 years of violin lessons (definitely the result of having a Chinese mother). Does this interest in the fine arts help my chances, considering i am applying for an Art History degree? And would it be helpful at all to write a letter to my admissions counselor at Fordham (NOT to make excuses or justify my poor school peformance) to explain to her that I’ve definitely had a change in maturity? That my once flippant attitude toward responsibilities is gone?

I really do have the ability to get great grades. I’m an avid reader whether the content is Scientific American of Oscar Wilde, so also, please don’t assume I’m a complete moron because of my grades. I want to show Fordham that my grades don’t reflect who i am… i really don’t want my life to turn in the wrong direction because of my past actions and i am willing to do whatever it takes to show that i have changed. I really hate how grades are what prove your smarts. School is really just about how well you can follow directions… which clearly i can’t do very well. I can think of many really really bright people who did poorly in high school that go on to be Renaissance Men.

Free tuition??? Could your parents adopt my son??!!! :)

I’m not an art critic but you appear to have talent and obviously desire to pursue a life in the fine arts. Will that help you in the application process? Well, I imagine that Fordham is looking to put together a well rounded class but I don’t know if your interests will come across as unique in this year’s applicant pool. And there’s no getting around the fact that your grades and SAT’s don’t put you in a favorable position compared to the typically accepted Fordham student.

It seems like you have recognized your part in regards to your poor school performance and are trying to change what you describe as your flippant attitude toward responsibilities. I am not sure that a letter will help though at this point. I would think this is something that you should have addressed in your application whether it was through your essay or in the additional info section.

Hope for the best but prepare yourself for the worst. It will not be the end of the world if you don’t get in. Trust that you will end up where you are meant to be and if you are still so sure it is Fordham, you can take what you’ve learned from all of this, really apply yourself in college and try again as a transfer. Best of luck!!

It’ll be very tough to get in but not impossible. If they see your talent and want to take a chance on you, they will. It really depends on the level of applicants this year (which seems to be on the high side) and how much space they have to take a chance on you. If they really want you, I think your best case scenario would be for them to put you on the wait list. Depending on how the class is shaped up, they may or may not take you. But to be realistic, you have a 1/10 chance…maybe less…and you should def be looking into backups.

Also, don’t completely lose hope. By brother was rejected to Fordham too before transferring in from Baruch. It’s not very hard to transfer in. So, just try the year after if you don’t get in.
Good Luck!

Which campus are you applying to? That could make a big difference because of your art background. Art history, I hope you realize, is as much a focus on history as it is art. It’s about understanding the past through the art it produced, not just liking art. If your goal is to own a gallery or become an artist it may not be the right track to that. I’m an art history major and I can tell you it has little to do with the design field. Also, what AP’s are you in? Did you take any last year? If so what did you get on the test?
Be warned- Fordham does not take most AP credits with their new core curriculum which totals about 20 classes…

in the first quote where i say that i “clearly can’t follow directions well” … i was being facetious… i was basically saying that i haven’t followed or payed attention in high school up until half way through junior year…

hey! i applied to Lincoln Center… i heard it was the more artistic campus? And YES!! The fact that art history combines history with philosophy, social movements, economics, and religious movements is the exact reason why i am so passionate about pursuing art history in college. I love the diversity of subjects it encompasses. I took AP American History and AP Gov… my school doesn’t have very many AP courses. A bunch of sciences but they aren’t my strong suit. I took honors physics this year if that helps. My average for THIS school year is about a 3.5 or 3.6… would it hurt to send an updated transcript? Thank you for your reply!

thank you for your reply! my GPA for this year is a 3.5-3.6… would it hurt to send an updated transcript? I’m very passionate about Fordham… would it hurt to send my admissions counselor a letter basically stating the transformation I’ve made (academically) and how I wish I had my current mindset earlier in highschool? … i pretty much just want to prove that i’ve matured, that studying and homework is no longer an option.

Fordham and all other top colleges are going to ask you for the final HS transcript in June anyways. So you can try to appeal a wait-list or rejection. If Fordham does end up denying you either way, then I suggest you go to a CUNY and then transfer in after freshmen year with a really high GPA.

I’m looking to transfer into Fordham next year as well.

Starburyknicks, I don’t want to keep spamming your thread on the alumni questions because I want to give other people a chance to ask you stuff as well.

But here are my HS GPA and SAT scores: 3.0 with no honors and AP from 9th to 11th grade. I’m currently a senior with Calculus, Spanish 8 honors, and AP Psych as three of my challenging courses on my schedule list (I’m purposely slacking off cause I can’t wait to start fresh in college, but I could do better if I want to.) My SAT score is a 1570.

Let’s say I attend Baruch College and get a 3.8 GPA in my freshmen year with high ECs. What are my chances for transferring into the SBA? Would you have me retake my SAT or just write a great essay to get in?
