My daughter is a wreck -- she was accepted in all three (and others, with some rejects). She wants to be a business major. We live in NY, so Binghampton is a bargain; but she is concerned about being in the sticks. Then she made Delaware Honors -- but unsure about its rep, plus being noted as a party school. Last there is Fordham, which is probably her first choice, but the most expensive option. Welcome any thoughts on the matter.

Good question and interesting facts. My D is at FCRH, not CBA. Sister schools at Fordham. You raise the three salient points with your problem: cost, honors rep versus prestige. Any honors is good. Delaware does have a bit of a party school rep from what I have heard, but the Honors College is highly regarded. How does that shake out in business? Fordham CBA also has an Honors College and if your D does well as a Freshman at Fordham she will be tapped for that. So she can make up that difference. Fordham is very expensive. CBA is going to move to Hughes, a beautiful gothic building in the center of campus presently a dorm. That is a plus. Its going to have a state of the art trading room, similating WallStreet trading and investment houses. The internships at Fordham are simply incredible, particularly in CBA. Plus they have foreign travel opportunities. Some CBA kids are in Beijing this semester.

Binghamton is prestigious among the SUNY schools, as you know, and it is somewhat remote and far from NYC. Its a great bargain, however.

The best advice, which I repeat over and over, is to visit each campus if you can in the next three weeks. Go to Fordham’s admitted student orientation. You will have an epiphany…either its going to be a good fit or its not. I suspect if Fordham is her first choice presently, then that will remain the case if she visits, though sometimes kids make a last minute change. Be true to herself (and yourself.) If cost is not a huge factor for you, then I can only say she won’t be disappointed in CBA. Those kids matriculate and do the core with the FCRH kids, then sort of split off sophomore year and room together in OHare.

You get the Jesuit education that neither state school Delaware or Binghamton will provide you. That is something special and of great value. Its something you carry with you for the rest of your life. Delaware has a much better football team, lol, but we are working on catching up! I know a kid who went to Delaware and majored in BioChem and is now doing a PhD at Maryland. Loved it.

But I would be remiss to dismiss Fordham’s unique setting and special offerings and Jesuit heritage. Just my two cents.

Its up to you and ultimately to her. Make the visit and do it during Orientation.

Good luck.

Thanks ghostbuster, I was wondering the same thing but you have cleared it up! Very informative :)
