Fordham's Prestige and Reputation

Hi everyone. I applied to Fordham regular decision as a safety. I live in NYC and to me, it seems as if Fordham isn't considered one of NYC's great colleges. Most people think of Columbia and NYU. However, by reading some of the posts here, some people seem to prefer Fordham over NYU (I do too.) You guys have decent to amazing stats and you choose Fordham. Is Fordham more well-known outside of the NYC, NY area. How would the states you come from rank Fordham among the other NYC colleges?

The vibe I get from hearing other people talk about fordham is that it used to be a LOT more respected than NYU (or NYZoo as it was called) but now NYU has gained a lot of momentum and is getting really selective. Since NYU is in Manhattan and Fordham has a small (what some would call "dinky") Lincoln Center campus, it is just not as attractive an atmosphere to a lot of people nowadays.
I don't know if that's actually true, but that's what it seems like to me.

Everyone is my area (Philadelphia) knows of Fordham and thinks it is a really good school. I think NYU looks better at the moment because of all the popularity it has been getting.

I'm originally from NYC, went to CUNY - Hunter College. Back then, and it was a while ago, Columbia was THE NYC school, but Fordham was next, Hunter and Queens followed after, and NYU was low on the totem pole. Obviously, they've done a pretty good job of building their reputation and making themselves desirable. Good for them. NYU now as cachet, but Fordham still has a reputation outside of NYC -- at least on the East Coast -- of being a very good school.

how is CUNY Baruch I hear it is great for business and is the best cuny?

Yeah I hear Baruch has a good business program. It'd be a really great deal if you got into the Baruch Honors College. I think Baruch, Hunter, and Queens are the best cuny's.

Hunters a good college my dad went and it was cheap!(he came from a poor family and bak then it was lierally free- or close 2!)

Anybody know anything about the Lincoln Center campus theatre department?

Is the faculty any good?

How long does it take to get from Lincoln Center campus to Rose Hill? (I see they have a van that makes regular runs).

Generally, Fordham ranks (in NYC) after Columbia and NYU and just above the best of CUNY (like Brooklyn, Queens, Hunter) and Yeshiva.

The LC theater department is very selective. There might be 80/90 kids in the whole program for all grade levels. I know someone in the department who talks of the teachers and classes very highly.

The Ram Van. It’s one of my favorite things about the school. It runs every half hour every day of the week. It’s 6 dollars round trip, free for classes, and if you plan to use it a lot there are other discounts. It even has wireless internet in the van!
Time between campuses is completely dependent on time of day. It’s subject to traffic in NYC. To give you an idea though… the longest trip I ever took was an hour and fifteen minutes, the shortest trip I ever took was 22 minutes. They average 30-45 minutes.

To the OP: We are from Florida, and, granted, many retirees from NYC and the NY area live in our community, and whenever I tell anyone that my daughter is at Fordham (LC campus), they all, without exception, are very impressed and say what a great school Fordham is, and say, “wow, she must be very smart to get in there!” I find Fordham has a very presigious reputation in my community of retirees from the NY area. My daughter also felt very strongly about Fordham over NYU, to the point where she wouldn’t even apply to NYU because she felt so strongly that Fordham was better for her. She is very happy there.

A really good school that like most private colleges, if it charged a tuition that had kept up with and not doubled the inflation rate the last 25 years, would be worth the cost of attending.

Just my opinion: As much as I love NYU (which is my #1), I really like Fordham. It seems like a very promising school that will get you where you want to go if you put in the effort. My advice: don’t worry too much about the school’s rank.

And another thing, something special about Fordham: the people. Think about that.

Just a note for people who do care about rankings… there are 2474 four year colleges in the United States, Fordham is ranked 61. That means Fordham is in the top 2% of schools.
Personally though, I think Fordham’s strongest attribute is in the values of its community, not it’s academics which also says something about the caliber of the school.

This is a four year old thread. Who resurrected it and why?
