Foreign Language, how many years recommended?

Does anyone know what the recommended amount of years of foreign language is for:

UC Berkley
UCLA
MIT
Stanford
Cal. Tech.

I am a sophomore currently in Spanish I (did not take it last year because I filled my schedule with a fine art and a practical art). I am going to take II and III for sure. Is it fine if I take three years for these schools? If not what should I do to get a fourth year?

I’ve heard for “top” colleges they want to see 4 years.

Definitely 4 years for those schools.

what should i do considering the fact that i am sophomore in spanish I? i am taking spanish II next year. what should i do to get fourth year?

^ You can’t. Just take Spanish for the rest of your time in high school.

You could take a class at your local community college.

You can test out of one of the levels of Spanish if your school allows. You basically just talk to your teacher and get all the needed materials, then study it over the summer and take the final before school starts. If you pass with x% or higher, you get credit for the class.

I did this with German, and skipped level III. The sooner you do it, the better, though, since the middle levels are generally the easiest (the first year or two are a lot of basics and grammar that a teacher is important for, and the higher levels are, well, higher-level classes).

what i am thinking of doing is, after finishing spanish II next year (junior year), taking spanish III over the summer in the summer school program my district offers and then taking spanish IV in senior year. is it a good idea to do this?

^ that’s a great idea! I asked my school if I could take Spanish II over the summer, and skip to Spanish III, they said no >.<

Anyways, as many years of a language as possible.

^^Skip Spanish II instead, and attempt to skip Spanish III if you want to take AP Spanish (do that in the same summer). it’s harder to skip Spanish 3 then Spanish 2.

I don’t think you need 4 years. Maybe 3 years. But that’s only because most people have gotten to the AP lvl in the 3rd year. I think it really depends on the lvl. I know some ppl who’ve only taken 3 years of foreign lang., and they got into really top schools.

I don’t know if I can skip spanish II because I’m already signed up for US History in the summer school I mentioned (to get ahead, not because I failed the class :D. ) I think I’m gonna en up taking II in junior year, III if I can over the summer of 11-12, an IV during senior year. Thank you for the replies and tips!
