How many years of foreign language?

Hi,
I'm a long time lurker, first time poster. I just got my new junior year schedule and noticed that I don't have a Spanish III class. If I want to get into a top college is 2 years of a foreign language sufficient?

Since my school is also on a semester block program I could have Spanish III/IV next year I suppose. Do you think this is a good idea or should I try to take Spanish III this year?

I think you should take Spanish III this year, because top colleges like 4 years of a language. The III/IV thing could work too, I suppose. Either way, get it in there (if you enjoy it).

You should probably take at least three years of Spanish...if not this year, take it next year...then again, it would be hard to take a full year (or more, if you took it second semester) off without practice

Yeah, three years is good, but four years would be great. I think I have 7 and 1/2 and I am a rising Junior.

?!? How can you have 7.5? lol. I'm a rising senior and I technically only have 2 years of language, but I've already completed up to AP Latin, so I think I'm okay. I'm doing the other AP Latin next year.

How do you have .5? LOL

^ I think he means like... a semester of it somehow. Idk either.

Usually three years is recommended. You should aim for this year. I am also a rising junior and I already have three years of foreign language and I am going to take another year.

I'm taking three years (skipping Spanish 7/8 [year IV]) and i think its fine. at least get in 3 years tho.

Yeah, I would just take it if at all possible (as in, it doesn't involve dropping a core class). Two years isn't okay, and three is sort of the bare minimum, especially since some people come into high school with a year or two already under their belt. While I doubt three years will hinder your chances at top schools if your projected area of study is outside of languages, it's hard to get back in the swing of Spanish after dropping a year. Just try and get it in there this year, and if the class you have to drop to make room for Spanish this year is available next year, you can always take it then. Also, the III/IV is really tricky with scheduling--your school may not have Spanish III first semester and IV second, so I wouldn't take that risk!

Well, I mean 7 and 1/2 credits:
Spanish 1
Spanish 2
Spanish 3
IB Spanish 4
Latin 1
Latin 2
Latin 3
Chinese 1 (one semester in 8th grade)

I will take IB Latin 4 and IB Spanich 5 next year. :)

^ I am so jealous of people like rmadden who can take that many classes. At my school it's all I can do to fit in 3 years of ONE language, and I know that's not as good as I'd like it to be, thus the skipping of Latin II.
We have so many requirements to graduate that we can't really take anything that we want, let alone more than one language.

I took high school spanish in middle school and two years in middle school. I am not a high school junior and all of the spanish classes are full. Does this count as three years of a language because some people have told me that my first year does not count. I could skip taking a language this year and just take AP spanish my senior year.
I am also taking the IB diploma.
How does this affect my college career?
