I was just talking to my guidance counselor and he told me that most top schools recommend four years of a foreign language. However, I plan to have three years of Spanish because I can't fit it into my schedule of classes that includes AP Comp Sci and AP Stats (which not many people take). Would this be bad for me? Should I just take a fourth year of Spanish even though I'm interested in other things?

BTW, this is how my Spanish education has gone so far:

9th grade - Spanish 2

Summer school before 10th - Spanish 3 (I am told colleges look at level of foreign lang)

dont know if this helps, but heres what harvard says:

There is no single academic path we expect all students to follow, but the strongest applicants take the most rigorous secondary school curricula available to them. An ideal four-year preparatory program includes four years of English, with extensive practice in writing; four years of math; four years of science: biology, chemistry, physics, and an advanced course in one of these subjects; three years of history, including American and European history; and four years of one foreign language.

but then again, what if you take 6 science years (honors earth, hon bio, hon chem, ap chem, ap bio, ap physics) and like 5 years math and like 4 history. I think it can probably be balanced depending on your major

I took one year of Latin and two years of Spanish and I still got into a pretty competitive school. I couldn't take Spanish III because I wanted to take AP Stats. I think having more advanced level math and science classes makes your application stand out even more especilly if you want to major in one of those areas.

It all depends on how much your school offers. If you're just skipping out the top level class, it might not matter that much.

Mine was easy, since my crappy public school's only language classes are Spanish I and Spanish II.

I've had...
5 yrs science (Phys. Sc., Biology I, Chem, Physics, Anatomy & Physiology)
7 yrs math (Alg I & II Honors, Geometry, AP Stats, Pre-Calc, AP Calc, AutoCAD/Pre-Engineering)
5 years English (debate/mock trial counts for one year if you take it 2 years)
4 yrs social & social science (APUSH, US Gov't, Geography, Psych)

Some school districts will give you credit in high school for a FL course that you took in middle school provided that you continue taking the same FL in high school. Check with your GC to see if the FL course from 8th got onto you high school transcript.

HS transcript shows French 1, 2 in middle school, then high school French 3, 4, and 5 and then French 6 Independent Study. AP Bio, Chem and Physics C. Advanced math. AP US Hist, Euro Hist, and US Gov.

My Spanish 1 in 8th grade didn't won't show up in my transcript and my school does offer AP Spanish as Spanish 4, but my schedule is full with other honors and AP courses.

I think it will be fine, and they will understand that there is a scheduling conflict. You have taken plenty of language and you are challenging yourself with AP's.

I took Spanish 1 in middle school, and Spanish 2 and 3 in high school. But I dropped it, and didn't take it Junior year, nor do I plan to take it next year. Im taking 4 periods of AP this year and 7 next year. Do you think thats ok?

I stopped after 3 too, it was difficult and the only spanish 4 was during the same period with the only ap calc and well, ap calc is much better. As for next year, not necessary.
