soo has anyone taken a summer language intensive thing?

Wait, does this apply to US History too? I stumbled upon this.

Edit: The writing section of the SAT is acceptable (680+).

I will. Intermediate French this summer. Are you interested in the program, emmeline?

I wish I had learned a Euro language instead of Japanese. After 4 years of it, I'd be awesome at it, instead of moderately good like with Japanese.

Plus, I'd be working in Europe this summer, instead of sweating my butt off in Tokyo.

Sigh.

yep im considering it evelyn

hi6 o log4 6okyo!

lif 3i25h muy friend hwo lvie sin denenchofu in tokyo d
o gehttqaslss palces to live lol

Lol a 500 in SAT II USH satisfies the American History Requirement?

Instead of seeing it as a burden, I enjoy learning other languages. After how many quarters do you think one can become resonably proficient in a foreign language? (UCLAri, I'm talking about European languages here!)

I bet that a good student of French or Spanish could become proficient in 6-9 quarters. I mean, speaking, reading, and writing proficient.

well if you have to pass up to a level 3 for a foreign language i have a question.
Iranian does not have a definite level 3, the only classes available are 1a (elementary persian), 20a (accelerated elementary persian), and 102a (intermediate persian). Which of these classes would i need to take to fulfill my foreign language requirements?
Also would I need to take the series (like 20a, 20b, 20c) or just one of the classes?

If you cant answer these questions who can i ask? The counselors i’ve contacted say they don’t know.

hahaha yeah the spanish test is pretty easy. If you’ve had spanish already in high school, just review the basics and you should be fine.

What’s the format of the spanish placement test? And approximately when is it? I’m guessing some time during zero week.

And what are the ‘basics’ of spanish I should be reviewing? My teachers were all over the place with teaching me spanish…

Hey, I took 3 years of Spanish but did not take the AP exam because I did not know about the Foreign Language requirement. So do I take the placement test during orientation week (coming up next week), and then what happens? How many classes of Spanish would I have to take at UCLA to satisfy the requirement? Can someone explain step by step for me, please?

Yes, you take the placement test. You don’t HAVE to take it at orientation, but it’s in your best interest to take it as soon as possible before you forget it.
You need to complete three quarters of a language at UCLA. The placement test will say what level you passed. If you place into Spanish 4, then you’ve met your language requirement and are done. If you place into Spanish 3, then you will need to take a Spanish 3 class to fulfill the requirement.

Thanks for the info,Liyana. I wish I knew about this requirement, I would have worked harder on my spanish and also taken the AP test. I did not have Spanish in my senior year so i am sure i have forgotten everything . Btw, I just looked it up, the Spanish placement exam is not offered until September( they don’t even have the exact date), so I guess I will have more time to review.

Last year, they didn’t even offer the placement exam fall quarter. I’m studying to take it this September too. I found this cool site to help me: [Learn Spanish](http://www.studyspanish.com/). Good luck! :)

Hey, do they test on the vosotros conjugations? 'Cause we skipped those in jr. and high school, since virtually all of Latin America uses Ustedes for all second-person plural communication.

I know engineers don’t have to fulfill the language requirement, but do you guys think it’s really worth it to squeeze in a couple of quarters in my already packed schedule?
Not counting Spanish, Chinese, and Portuguese, what other language do you guys recommend taking at UCLA?

Hey, thanks for the link, Saltybruin12. My mom has been breathing down my neck about that. So I might not even be able to take the placement exam this fall? Frankly, I don’t understand the need for the language requirement. Do all UC schools require it? 3 classes of Spanish equal 1 more quarter of school = more loans ( because i really don’t think that i will pass the test) and it is just a waste of time and money. Sigh… I guess I will have to study for the exam!

You’re welcome! Well, the foreign language requirement might not be a permanent fixture of the College of Letters and Science anymore if budget cuts have enough of a say. It looks like the placement exam WILL be offered this Fall: [Department of Spanish and Portuguese - SPANISH PLACEMENT EXAM INFORMATION](http://www.spanport.ucla.edu/courses/lower-division-program/spanish-placement-exam-42.html). The English major (my major) requires 5 quarters of foreign language/foreign literature in translation. So 3 sounds pretty good from my perspective! ;)
