I was reading the daily bruin the other day and it mentioned that they were considering changing the foreign language requirement. They were supposed to have a committee meeting on the matter a few days ago. Anyone heard any news on that.

I really hope they change it and allow one to be exempt if they passed three years of it in high school.

^ Ditto.

10char

If they don’t dump that stupid requirement, I might not graduate on time. -.-

I was planning to independently learn Spanish. I shouldn’t of known better than to trust myself! I’ll probably take some Spanish courses at a community college in the summer.

^^^ What do you think the chances of them actually changing the requirement are?

I mean, in theory, I think they realize that the foreign language req. is total crap.

They want to keep the foreign language requirement, but they also want to make it easier for people to graduate on time.

I was also hoping to learn enough Spanish on my own to pass out of it. I do have college credit for Spanish 2, though, so worst case scenario it would only be one class.

Boy I sure hope the FL requirement will be dumped. I was placed in Spanish 3 and I really don’t want to take the class.

Maybe they’ll dump it over budget concerns…

I dont know what the heck they want to do with it. I took the spanish placement exam and am still not sure what passing/placing means in terms of their courses/requirements. Foreign Language department is all over the place right now. Hopefully it gets cleared up soon so I dont forget all my high school spanish

I already forgot my high school Spanish. I’m praying it gets removed. Honestly, I don’t think anyone really learns a language through classroom settings anyways unless they’re super into it.

^^^ I’m in the exact same boat.

I had a thought though, can you just sign up for Spanish 3, take it P/NP, and then have the requirement fulfilled?

Yes you can take it on a P/NP basis. I know about this because i am in the same boat so I confirmed it with the Spanish dept.

I highly doubt they’d just dump it, the school would probably get some negative press for it and be pressured to keep it even though it is worthless.

But hey, what do I know, I’m an engineer and don’t have a foreign language requirement :)

What is the requirement right now?

You have to take or pass out of 3 years of a foreign language.

3 YEARS WTH. that’s wack son. I agree with binks09.

I think you may be misinterpreting what Bink’s saying.

He means 3 high school years, or 3 college quarters. We also have placement tests to put students in more advanced language courses so you may indirectly get credit for your highschool classes or independent study.

Wait isn’t he saying that he wants them to change it so that if you take 3 years of FL in high school, you don’t have to take FL in college? Because that’s actually what I always thought it was like, but I guess not.

Yeah, 3 classes. That’s equivalent to 3 years in high school, or one year at UCLA, lol.

The point of the requirement is that you actually learn the language (so as to become more cultured or something, I presume). If you took 3 years in high school, you should in theory pass out of the class easily. If not, you didn’t learn the material - tough luck.

If you’re desperate you could maybe get a native speaker to pretend to be you?

OH. I misinterpreted what ThisCouldBeHeavn was saying.
