Does anyone have any recommendations between the two? Which is picky base on grammar, sentence structure and so on?
German is much more phonetic, so memorizing spelling and pronunciation is easier. Both have arbitrary gender for nouns to memorize.
Grammar is about the same level of difficulty. German is easier to pronounce and hear. But French has a lot of vocabulary that shares latin roots with English words, so it can be easier to read once you know a little of it, while German has a lot of verbs that look similar to each other but have very different meanings because of the prefixes. Both France and Germany (and other countries where those languages are spoken) are great places to visit… do either of them appeal to you more?
My dream is to live in Switzerland. I also like to visit Germany in the future maybe study abroad. Is studying abroad based on GPA?
Do you have any other language experience?
I’m from Peru, but I would rather learn a new language. I forgot how to speak it but understand when someone speaks it I understand them. It be weird going to a 101 class and laugh everytime
If you have some native Spanish, you will pick up French much more easily than German.
Regarding Switzerland, there are French speaking bits and German speaking bits, but note that Swiss French is comparatively easy to understand for a foreigner, whereas Swiss German is really a different language, as different fro the German you’d learn as Dutch.
If you know spanish, then definitely do French if you are looking for an easier thing.
German is super picky on the word “the”…instead of “el” and “la” and las and los, you have Der, Die, Das, Den, Dem, des …you have masculine, feminine, neutral and plural but for the accusative, dative, genative and nominitive cases. Over time, these became “the” in English.
When my son visited Switzerland as a high school student, he enjoyed going to McDonald’s for lunch because everyone was greeted in four different languages (Italian, French, German & English). So, if you want to live in Switzerland, it might be best to study both German & French.
