Hi,

so..I am taking classes in a college for UC transfer.

I didn't take any foreign language classes when I was in high school. As far as I understand I need to take two foreign language classes in a college in order to transfer to a UC.

Is there any kind of test that I can take instead of taking classes in a college?

You actually only have to take one language class to transfer to a UC to satisfy the IGETC requirements. Yes, there are language tests that you can take instead of taking the class (I don’t know the name(s) of them…anyone else?).

That said, if you already know another language well enough to take a test, you might want to think about taking that class instead of the test. It is 5 “easy A” units towards your transfer requirements…

Just make sure that your teacher doesn’t know you can read/write in that language. They are usually okay if someone knows how to speak, but they are strongly against people who can already read and write for the obvious reasons.

@TonyPreMed2013 // I appreciate your reply!

are you sure that I only need to take one class (5 units)? I thought I need to take two classes.

so…I am a korean. I really don’t think I can take a korean class in my college. Some of my friends took SAT II Korean test when I was in my high school. Anyone knows that I can take SAT II now?

so this is from my college’s transfer information webpage.

"(UC REQUIREMENT ONLY)
Language Other Than English
Proficiency equivalent to two years of high school study in the same language. (May use any Foreign Language course listed in the catalog through level two [example: French 1+2].) "

can anyone please confirm it??

Yeah, I’m 100% positive that requirement is met by just one intro language class but hopefully someone else will confirm.

Its funny you said you are Korean! I took Korean 1 last semester (I’m not Korean but my GF is). There were about 5 or 6 Korean American students in my class. Most of them already knew how to speak, and some even knew how to read and write but they all just pretended to only know how to speak. They all ended up getting A’s.

It is probably easier if you just take the SAT II though ;)

im not sure how it is when you take it at a community college. but i took french 1 and french 2 in hs and that’s all i needed. but maybe if u take it at community college all u need is french 2? however for u to take french 2 in ur community college im sure u need to pass french 1 so i dunno. ask a counselor.

^No, close though…

French 1 + French 2 in HS = French 1 at a CCC

You would only need to take French 1 at your CCC to satisfy IGETC

Ask a counselor just to be 100% sure though

This is copied from my CCC regarding how to satisfy the language requirement for IGETC…

FOREIGN LANGUAGE – (Required for UC only) This requirement may be fulfilled by completion of two years of one foreign language in high school with a grade of C (2.0) or higher (high school transcripts must be on file at SMC) or by completion at SMC of the first semester of a foreign language selected from the following courses:

American Sign Language 1; Chinese 1; French 1; German 1; Hebrew 1; Italian 1; Japanese 1; Korean 1; Persian 1; Russian 1; Spanish 1

It might be different from Community College to Community College but from everything I have heard most CCC’s only require one semester of a foreign language (one 4 or 5 units class) to satisfy the IGETC requirement.
