Foreign lang. needed to transfer to UCs?

Hi, so I'm a high school senior and i'm trying to gather as much info as I can about what classes I need to take, etc. to transfer since I know counselors are not really helpful.

Anyway, I was browsing around assist.org and I was looking at the IGETC courses. At the bottom it says UC Requirement - Foreign Language. From reading UCTransfer.org I thought that foreign language wasn't needed? Or maybe I read it wrong?

It says:

AREA 6 - LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ENGLISH (UC Requirement Only)
Proficiency equivalent to two years of high school study in the
same language.

Perhaps I'm overthinking the whole transfer process, but I'm just feeling a little overwhelmed lol.

If you HAVEN'T taken two years of a foreign language in highschool, you have to take the equilviant of two HS yrs in college. For me, this equates to have to take two quarters.

But if you have taken a foreign language in highschool, then don't worry about it.

I had to do my "two years" in college. One suggestion if you don't think you can do this load on top of your h.s. work in time, next fall enroll in American sign language 1a at you community college. You only need to take 1b after that to meet the equivalent. It's a fun class and much easier than other languages. There is a 16 year old in my class and he gets by just fine. The class is half the work as the other languages because you have to take the second class "2," instead of ending on 1b...hope that makes sense.

i took my two years in HS. but never took foreign language at my cal state. they never required me to send in my HS transcripts for UCLA.

lol are you suggesting he lie and take the risk? That is very bold of you : )

haha no im suggesting her to take the two years foreign language. i thought its required to take two years in hs to graduate? well that was the case at my school.

This is an IGETC requirement not a UC Admissions requireemnt; unless the campus/program you are applying for requires IGETC to be completed. If you plan to transfer to a UC and want to complete IGETC then Area 6 must be completed, again only for IGETC completion.

For UC Davis IGETC is never a requirement and in most cases is not recommended. Please complete UC eligibility requirements and lower division preparatory courses for your intended major. If interested in a A.B. (Bachelors of Arts Degree, Davis calls it A.B instead of B.A) please consider taking language courses since it might be required for graduation. Contact the department advisers for more advise regarding language requirements for graduation.

its not a requirement for admission, but if you didn't satisfy the requirement in HS, you will have to either take it at your CC or eventually at the UC you transfer to, is that correct?

I highly doubt they will ask for your HS transcript upon request for transferring. But i may be wrong, anyone know?

For me (UCSB), they are asking for either my HS transcript or IGETC certification from my CC.

I know for h.s. it's at least 2 years of a foreign lang. to graduate. I've already taken 3. so as part of IGETC I would not have to?

And also, since I'm most likely going to major in english I would have to take foreign language anyway right?

Yeah, your CC or school you're transfering to needs to verify that you completed the 2 course of lang. in highschool by sending them the HS transcripts.

usually, how long is 2 years worth of foreign language? how many semesters?

One semester.

calvinator: Taking a language other than English depends on your University, College and major. A language other than English might not be required to graduate; therefore you might not have to compete the language at the CC or UC level (unless you want to complete IGETC of course).

Some UC campuses might require High school transcripts regardless of IGETC; UC Davis always requires high school transcripts of our transfer students.

thank you for your response. So IGETC isn't required to satisfy lower division for transfers? I know its not a requirement for admission, but in order to start taking upper division major courses, wouldn't you need to satisfy the GE or IGETC ? Meaning you would need to take some form of foreign language? Sorry if that sounds confusing.

The reason I ask is because i'm transfering in ucsb in the fall and i'm currently taking spanish 1 because I didnt satisfy the lang. requirement in HS. Taking this spanish course will complete my IGETC requirements prior to transfering so I can get started on upper division right away. Is this the right path? Now i'm confused if i need to even take this spanish course.

I would start of by checking with UCSB; they might recommend you complete the IGETC prior to admission (some campuses will highly recommend IGETC is completed). Then I would check, depending on your college and major and degree at UCSB, if a language is required for admission.

You shouldn't need to complete lower division GE to start upper division courses of your major; although completion of IGETC is an option to complete the lower division GE requirement of your degree. You can also plan to complete the UC GE pattern (again this might or might not include language) before graduation. Do you need to take the spanish course, yes if you want to complete IGETC. If you don't want to complete IGETC I would look in the general catalog for UCSB to determine if language is a requirement for your degree. That might assist in your decision to complete IGETC or not.
