Have not taken a foreign language course yet, am I screwed?
How many classes will I have to take?

You have to reach the equivalent of 2 years of high school foreign language for IGETC. At some CCCs that’s just one semester. Get your CCC’s IGETC worksheet and find out.

What if you qualified for a uc out of hs ? I went to ucsb freshman year, then a ccc for a year trying to transfer to UCI. Do I need a foreign language? I didn’t take one because I already qualified straight from hs…

You can be IGETC certified using your high school foreign language coursework. Here’s SMC’s IGETC worksheet:

Check the bottom of page 3.

I believe you fulfill the requirement after five quarters or three semesters.

^It depends on the CCC. At several, it’s only one semester.

Do you have to have a foreign language? Or can you be admitted as a transfer with out a foreign.

I called UCI/UCLA several days ago asking about the same question. I was told foreign language was NOT required to transfer; however, it is required if you want to transfer as an IGETC certified. Basically, all they need you to do to transfer is finish GE classes and a certain number of units, along with your major pre-requisites.

The reason why they recommend we finish foreign language at CCC though is because all UC students are required to complete a certain level of foreign language to GRADUATE from UC, and it can take a lot of time if you didn’t take any foreign language at CCC.

@whisper11 That is the best thing I heard all day. Thank you.
