foreign language requirement

do you have to take spanish? i took ap spanish, but i did not take the ap test because i suck at it and i was taking 6 other tests...

i noticed that they give 6 hours of credit for a 2 on the ap exam? also, they give credit for SAT II scores--I think i'm going to take the next SAT II standby to try to get some credit

can anybody give me some more info on the foreign languages at nd?

If you're an engineer- no language req.
If you're anyone else- "moderate skill" (I think)

I believe business does not have the language requirement either...

so, basically, you don't have to take foreign language in first years studies, then, depending on what you go into after that you may have to take it?

Is it very difficult to begin a new language at ND? I've studied Latin throughout high school, but in college I wanted to try something new (well, something people actually speak). Are the lowest level classes beginner ones?

For the college of Arts and Letters, you need to reach "proficiency," which means an intermediate level class. It's very easy to start a new language. I've taken Spanish throughout high school, and I'm planning on being a Spanish major, but I'm also taking Irish starting next semester.

As a 4 year Latin guy in HS, I also wanted to take a foreign language that people actually speak. I took German, a language which I've always wanted to learn but my hs did not offer. It was a lot more difficult than Latin, quite possibly because I had to developed skills for the oral component. One thing that I noticed was that the class felt very rushed--it wasn't intensive German, but it definitely felt like I was about to be dropped in Vienna or Berlin right after the course ended. Maybe it was just that one class, but it seemed intense.

I think you can take a test offered online by ND. My son did it, and ended up knocking off all but one semester of requirement. I can't remember when they gave notice of when the test is offered, but now that we're aware of it, my daughter is hoping to take it and test out of all of it, if possible. There is a general foreign language requirement for pretty much any major... If I find out about the specifics of the online test, I'll post it on here.

If you get a 5 on an AP language test, do you still have any language requirement to complete?

I got a 5 on Latin and took Latin at OSU before coming to ND and I got credit for it, though I'm not sure which of those they gave me credit for.

She took Spanish at the University of Washington, but they made her sign a credit waiver for that because...I'm not sure why, as she just did it to get into AP in 3 years not 4; she didn't do it for high school credit.
