I am a sophomore in high school and in Spanish 4. I took Spanish 1 and 2 in 7th and 8th grade, and I took Spanish 3 freshman year. I have gone through with As and Bs, but I do not feel like I would do well in Spanish AP, which is the course offered for junior year. Would it be fine to not take Spanish next year, or would that limit my chances when applying for colleges?
I would strongly recommend taking a language AP. They can be very useful in satisfying college graduation requirements. The last thing that you want to happen is to have to restart a language in college to fulfill a requirement.
You can satisfy the foreign language requirements of some colleges with your current classes, but as the above poster mentioned, it’ll be better if you take AP. Schools like to see consistency and quitting a language before taking the highest level offered is not a good way to show that. Colleges also like to see students who take challenging courses and do well in them.
It depends on what you want to study, which colleges you’re aiming for, whether you hope to continue with Spanish in college or would rather start a new foreign language…
Since you’ve had Spanish 4, you’re okay everywhere.
Taking AP would make you more competitive, especially if you’re aiming for a social science/humanities major, a top business school (ie., Wharton would rather you’d completed AP before you get there), or plan on taking Spanish rather than a new foreign language.
If you’re aiming for Engineering, your state flagship, etc, you’re good.
What else would you be taking?
Thank you for replying! I’m not too sure what I want to major in. However, I would be replacing Spanish AP with AP Comparative Government. Most of my other classes are AP except for my law class, which is Honors as it is the only level my school offers.
What would your schedule look like?
Would it be US and Comparative Government or just US Gov?
