Foreign Language Requirements

I know that many colleges require students to study a foreign language in order to graduate. I'm planning to apply to several schools as a junior transfer next year, but I'm worried that the college I choose may require that I study a foreign language. I struggled with foreign languages in high school, and I find them dull and trivial.

Do colleges ever waive foreign language requirements for transfers? Has anyone here been in a similar situation?

Thanks.

No, they almost never waive liberal arts requirements just because you’re a transfer.

It depends on the college and what division you are in. For me, in my specific school within NYU, I only need one semester of language. For the CAS division, they need four semesters.

See if there’s a “loophole” language. Often, there will be one language that’s a LOT easier, albeit not as “practical” as Chinese, French or Spanish. At NYU, those languages are Irish, American Sign Language and some of the less popular languages, such as Tagalog/Filipino.

I am not saying that these languages are not as “good” as other languages, I’m just saying that at NYU, these languages are less popular and it means that the classes are smaller, which begets a better environment for learning.
