Foreign Language and Transfers

Apparently my local advisor and I both missed this and I just happened to come across it yesterday...

Do any other transfer students know about past courses in foreign language and acceptance? I graduated high school with one year of Spanish and didn't need it at my 2 year college. I'm graduating my local college with a 4.0 with challenging classes, Pres of class, Honorable Military Veteran, and Extra Currics but now I'm afraid to check the mail. Do you know if they still accept and I would take the 2nd language there?

Richmond’s minimum admission requirements include two years of the same world language in high school (or one year of a world language in college–meaning the completion of elementary level language). This is directly related to the fact that all Richmond degrees require the completion of intermediate level language. As an admission office, our job is to be certain to the extent possible that every student we admit has a strong enough foundation to complete this degree requirement.

Our feeling is, though, that a student with this little language may have a difficult time completing intermediate level language here at Richmond and we may encourage the student to stay where they are to finish the language requirement before coming here (every student’s record is different, though, so these decisions are made on a case by case basis). The student who has completed through the intermediate level before they would enroll here is often the more competitive transfer applicant.

One additional point for others reading the thread: Richmond does NOT recognize American Sign Language as meeting the foreign language requirement.
